Asset Reuse

Jul 17, 2012

We want to reuse the same picture in multiple locations in ourstoryline project.  Must we add to the file size everytime by creating a new instances of the picture or can we reuse the first inserted instance?  Also, if I insert and then delete a picture, is it truly removed from the program?  WE want to use high impact images but not bloat the program.  Thanks!

Hi Audrey, there is some asset reuse within Storyline, if you insert it each time I believe it gets treated as a different object each time and increases the filesize.  But if you duplicate or copy and paste it should count as one instance.

There may be re sampling if you resize the asset.  Not sure about what happens if you delete it, I would hope it was deleted from the file

Hi Audrey -

While we don't currently have a library that allows instances of objects, you could use something like Web Objects to pull in external images.

So, if you had a particular graphic used across your project, it could be updated outside the project if it were inserted as a web object.

This isn't a common use case, but it's an option. Here's a quick demo of what the process might look like:

Hi Emily!

We've added many features since this first post! First, Format Painter which allows authors to copy the style of objects and paste it on other objects. We've also added the Media Library which keeps track of all the media that you've included in the course. You can see both of those in action in this quick video I've created for you.

Great question, Brent!

For easy access to internal images across courses, I would take advantage of the Block Templates feature. It allows you to save existing blocks and their content as block templates and reuse those block templates in other courses.

You can also create a folder that contains all of the image files in your course by exporting it for Web. Open the zipped output folder, and you'll find another folder called "assets." All of the image files can be found inside that folder.

Let me know if that helps you!
