Audio issue with USB microphone

I am just getting started with Storyline (no previous Articulate experience either) and am having difficulty recording audio. If I do a screen record my USB microphone works just fine. However, if I try to add a narration to an existing slide, I go to insert, audio and select the option to record. But, when I begin speaking, my microphone doesn't pick up my voice, my computer speakers do. I've tried muting my speakers, etc. but it didn't work.
Am I missing something. How do I get my microphone to record the narration.
On a separate note, when I complete a screen record, if I select a single slide, the audio is there. If I choose any of the other options, the audio disappears. Why is that?
Thank you.

Hi Jud,
I had an issue this week where the audio recording settings in Windows kept deselecting the microphone.I had to keep putting a check mark in Select for the Microphone as I was about to record. So i had to keep the window below open as well as Storyline to check it wasn't deselecting. Not sure if this is related to your issue but I thought I'd let you know.
Thank you Steve. Per your suggestion I took a look at my own system settings and set my microphone as the default. I also disabled the internal mic to be safe. When I just tried to narrate a slide it worked perfectly.
Thank you again for your help.
