audio timing

Jan 31, 2015

I am having trouble timing my audio to objects. I tried both putting the audio in the time line and lining it up to the object and I've also tried using cue points and triggers to line it up. Both have caused issues. I want a pop sound to accompany the object when it appears on the slide.

I've attached a sample of three slides that don't work. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Paula,

The new trigger to play audio via a cue point works well in Storyline 2. However, there are some things to take into consideration.

First, the total length of the audio file. Audio has to play completely through before it loops back to its starting point to play again. This *pop* sound effect is one half (.5) second.  Your Cat Groups are also set at .5 second apart.

Meaning, the timeline is going to keep on going to the next Cat Group to appear, but it's too late by then for the next trigger to catch up to play the audio again.

That said, there are two ways to solve this:

  1. Spread your Cat Groups out to 1 second intervals and then trigger cue points.
  2. Make a copy of the audio file 4 times, lose all the triggers, and move the audio file down the timeline to the same place as a Cat Group appears. This approach keeps your groups at the .5 second intervals.

I've attached a fix for the first slide using option #2 with copies of the audio sound effect.  I think this works the way you wanted.

Another tip: I had a problem adjusting the groups to match the audio. At first I thought something in your file was causing Storyline to freeze. Turns out it's due to the number of images on one slide. There's 96 images of cats and their original sizes range from 1237 x 804 to 500 x 337 all reduced down with the smallest at 34px. They still retain their original file size regardless of how small you reduce them. So if you're experiencing a lag in performance it's due to the 96 larger image sizes trying to load on one slide. Do you have photo editing software such as Photoshop or Gimp where you can reduce them to the size you want before inserting them into your project? That should help.

Hope this helps.
