Blank screen on second attempt of a quiz

Hello,

I have a course with a 10 question quiz at the end. They are allowed two attempts at the question. If (at first) they get it wrong they see the “Try Again” layer (on the QUESTION slide) that has a  screenshot of relevant slide in the course… that provides the correct answer for their second attempt. If they get it wrong a second time, the see the “Incorrect layer” on that QUESTION slide. The learner must pass with an 80% or better to pass. If they do not pass (the quiz) they see the “Failure layer” on the RESULTS slide. This where the problem begins…

The (custom) “Retry” button on the “Failure” layer of the Results Slide is set to “Reset Results” AND “Restart Course” to take the learner back to the beginning of the course. After reviewing the course, they are brought back to the quiz again. This time around, when they get a question wrong, and click on the “Try Again” button on the “Try Again” question layer…..ONLY A BLANK SCREEN COMES UP! I am thinking this is because the questions are allowed only TWO attempts??? Is there a way to reset the question slides ?

Any suggestions?

Hey John!

That certainly sounds strange. I'm curious to get a closer look at your file to nail down what could be causing this. Would you mind sharing it with our team here?

Also, can you help me with a few more details?

  • Does this problem happen in Storyline Preview, or only after you publish the project?
  • Do you see an improvement if you delete the "Restart Course" trigger and replace it with "Jump to slide 1.1"?

Hello,
Thank you for getting back to me. I have to get permission from our Legal dept. to release the file. Can you assure me that the file will remain confidential and not appear on the discussion forum?
I tried republishing the file with "Jump to slide 1:1" and still got the same blank screen.

I VERY much appreciate your time to look into this matter!

Best,
John Carter

Hi John,

Absolutely. The link that Alyssa shared above is a link to upload to our support team via support case where you will work 1:1 with a support engineer.

It looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if needed by clicking ‘Edit’ beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

Hi Leslie,
Thank you for getting back to me. I just went to the Forum to see if anybody else had replied to my problem and saw the email that I sent to your team there (with my email sig - thanks for the "heads-up" about that...). My concern is that sending my Storyline source file will also appear in the public forum. I am still waiting for "legal" to approve the sending of this source file. I have been trying multiple variations and still continue to have the same problem.

Thanks!
John Carter

Hi again, John.  I made a small change to your Results slide.  I added the trigger to jump to slide 1.5 (the first question slide), and I made sure it came after the trigger to reset the results.

After previewing and publishing, the second overall quiz attempt worked for me.  I purposefully failed the first time.  Upon retaking the whole quiz, I was able to use the Try Again button to return to the base layer of the question slide and answer again.

  • Is the blank screen happening during a preview of your course?  Or is it only after publishing?
  • If after publishing, where are you hosting your course, and what browser do you use to test it?

Thanks!

John Carter

Thank you! I did not intend for it to be in the public forum.
I really appreciate Y'all taking a look at this.
I'll try your solution and give it a whirl. FYI ( in response to Crystal's question...) It was happening in when previewing and after publishing to my desktop. I was using IE because that is the suggested browser for use with our LMS (PeopleSoft).

Thanks again!
John

Hey John,

Looks like you were able to remove your post above and I see that Jon is helping you out in a private support case.

I'll add your most recent notes with a link to this conversation for Jon.

Hi Crystal,
Thanks for looking into this for me.

I am not sure what will be posted publicly on the forum...(this email?)

I tried your suggestion except that I had it jump to slide 1.1 (the beginning slide because we will force the learner to review the entire course if they flunk the quiz). I also put the trigger to "jump to slide 1.1" on the "Failure" layer of the results slide (AFTER the trigger to reset the results)

I am still getting a blank screen when I click on the "Try Again" button the second time through the quiz

This happens both in Preview and after publishing the file. I am publishing to my computer desktop and opening from there. I only send content to the LMS after I know it is working locally.

Is it possible for you to send me the .story file you created so I can see how you have it set up?

Many Thanks,
John

Hi again, John.  Sorry for the confusion!  I know you're getting different email notifications from different people, so let me try to help sort it out with you.

You'll receive an email notification for this post which I'm actually putting in the public forum discussion that you originally started in November.  Whenever someone replies to your post, you'll get an email notification.  If you reply from your email, your reply is still included here in the discussion post.  It isn't private.

To keep it simpler, let's keep talking in your support case, which is email only.  You should have an email from Jon Holmberg from this morning, RE: Case #01584296.  Let him know what you're seeing, and he'll continue to work privately with you.

To note - I had downloaded the Measurable Goals file, and it looks like Jon is working with the Combined Ethics file.  Thanks again for working through it with us!
