Bookmarking/Resume not working in CHROME

May 05, 2020

I have had a few client complaints come in stating that they exited their courses properly and therefore should have bookmarked, but it is starting the user at the beginning when it is re-launched. The common link here seems to be the browser being used.

This is NOT happening with everyone, or every course.

Courses are developed using SCORM 1.2, HTML5 output - Articulate Storyline 360, courses running on in house developed LMS.

1. Has anyone else run into issues with this?

2. How was it resolved?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts or ideas.

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for reaching out!

Is it possible to republish the course using SCORM 2004? The reason I ask is that what might be causing the issue here is that the suspend_data element is reaching the limit. The suspend_data element is what tells the learning management system (LMS) where you leave off when you exit the course.

We have a great resource that provides more details as well as other possible solutions here:

Please keep us updated on this and let us know if you have any questions!

Hi Wendy!

Not to worry, we have tips on ways to configure this limit in your course!

If you have a large course that exceeds suspend data limits, here are some suggestions for correcting it:

  • Disable the resume feature in Storyline.
  • Reduce the number of slides until the resume feature works as expected. The limit will vary, depending on a variety of factors. You'll need to test your content in your LMS to verify.
  • Republish your course for SCORM 2004 3rd Edition or 4th Edition, both of which support much longer suspend data.

We are running into this issues too. The Resume function would send our students back to the beginning of the course. Our course is only 35 slides. We tried the course in Chrome, Firefox, MS Edge, and it's the same issue. We noticed that it's not happening on all of our PCs, only some of them. It seems like it's a browser setting since other machines are working. We check the browser's setting and it's all the same. Anyone got some suggestions?

Course was developed in 360 storyline with SCORM 2004 4th edition

Thank you in advance,

Hi Tim,

Thank you for reaching out!

A few questions for you about this behavior:

  • May I ask which LMS are you using?
  • Do you also see the same behavior happen in SCORM Cloud
  • How does the course launch for learners? Does the course launch in a new window?

Please keep us posted and let us know if you have any questions!

Hi Vincent,

Thank you for getting back to us on this. We figured out a "temp" solution. The reason why it's temp is because it's odd.

For us to get it working on PCs that didn't have the "resume" feature working, we changed the Chrome bowser settings. In the general settings, there is a "Clear cookies and site data when you quit Chrome" option. Once we enable it, those PCs can now resume.

The reason why it's odd is because we didn't need to do this on some of the PCs that have the "resume" feature working. So if anyone is having issues with the resume feature on chrome, we recommend trying to enable that option in the Chrome browser settings.

Cheers,

-Tim

We are having a similar / new to us problem (relaunched our 50 courses this past Monday, August 17, 2020). The courses that had the player setting: Launch player in new window, and allow user to resize browser - worked fine in the Modern player (scorm 1.2 / moodle LMS) in prior terms. When we relaunched the courses this week, the Resume feature no longer worked. The courses with this setting are starting from the beginning whenever you exit and try to return.

Resetting the Browser Setting to uncheck, Launch player in new window allows the Resume feature to work, but users can no longer resize the course window.

Is this a known issue?  What can we do other than reset all of the courses to no longer launch in a new window?

Hi there, Rita!

Thank you for your post. I haven't come across this on the latest version of Storyline 360 as of yet, so I'm glad you reached out!

  • Could you share more detail on your relaunching process—were the courses republished?
  • If republished: Which update of Storyline 360 are you using? We fixed an issue in Update 42 where course completions and quiz scores weren't recorded in an LMS when the player was set to launch in a new window, so I wonder if this might be related.

I'm having a similar issue. I've republished some SL2 courses to SL360 with HTML5 output only. Tracking is done on number of slides viewed (90% of total). Output is SCORM1.2. LMS is Moodle 3.5 with suspend data switched to allow more than the standard set for SCORM 1.2. All these courses worked ok in SL2 but now they won't resume in the correct place using Chrome or safari. Edge and Firefox seem to be working fine as does SCORMCloud. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Giorgia and Siobhan!

It sounds like you're both still running into this snag with bookmarking! I'm sorry to hear that.

I'd like our Support Engineers to work with you each one on one so that we can understand what the fix is! If you're interested in that, please use this link to start a support case. You'll hear from our team as soon as possible.

Hi, Madeline.

Thank you for reaching out!

Let me ask you a few questions to narrow down the issue:

  • Which LMS are you using?
  • You mentioned some users are having this issue. Do you know which browsers they are using? Are others able to resume the course?

Since this can be very specific to your scenario, I would encourage you to open a support case here, so we can take a closer look at your settings.

Dear Maria

Thanks for replying.

We are using Moodle .

Previously, I have one or two cases. This time round, there is one reporting. He is using goggle chrome. As he is user in india and the menu is restricted lock. Therefore the booking marking is not appear. He have to read all again

So far, I have no other report on this case. May I check, is google chrome having some issue on bookmarking?

Leslie McKerchie

Hi Madeline,

Thanks for the additional information.

  • Are you able to replicate the issue the user is experiencing?
  • I'm curious what version of Chrome they are currently using?
    • We did have an issue specific to Chrome Version 83, but the current version is Version 89, which is what we currently support.

If you need our team to take a look, then with your permission, please share your project file with our support engineers to investigate what's happening. You can share it privately by uploading it here. It will be deleted when troubleshooting is complete.

Hello,

I found the issue related to MS Edge and Chrome browsers. This is an error that happens in the latest release in Chrome and MS Edge, and it impacts course tracking. I used to change the setting on Chrome and Edge which solved this issue (://flags/#allow-sync-xhr-in-page-dismissal). However, with the recent updates on both these browsers, this setting couldn't help anymore.

When you publish in scorm 2004, 3rd edition (which helps increase more suspend data), you need to add a "Resume button" on the top bar menu with an "Exit course" triggers. Whenever learners want to save their learning progress, they just click on that button and exit the course. Bookmarking will be resumed when they come back to the course.

Hope it could help!
