Bullet size and spacing changes after exporting to Word and importing back

Nov 13, 2017

There are some very basic flaws in the export/import function for translation using Word DOC format. Here is one that creates a lot of manual formatting  work for us after we translate a course.

  • Create a slide containing a bulleted list (see file Bullets.story)
  • Export the file to Word (see file Bullets.doc)
  • Import Bullets.doc back into the project (see file Bullets_Imported.story)

Result: The bullets are now larger and the space between bullets and text is smaller.

Workaround: Highlight the list, and toggle the bullet format on and off.

See attached files to reproduce the issue.

This is the basic kind of problem that makes it difficult for me to recommend Storyline as a serious contender for content that needs to be translated.

I'm using the latest version of Storyline 360.

Hi Beat,

Thanks for sharing your examples here. It's something I came across myself recently and have reported to our team as possible bug so that they can investigate further. I've include this discussion in that report too and then I'll be able to update you here once there is any additional information to share.

Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed quickly, while others take longer to resolve. Here's more information on how we identify and tackle bugs.

I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update on this issue. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry it’s slowing you down.

Hi all!

I know this is a dated discussion, but I wanted to share an update if others come across this discussion with a similar request! We released Enhanced Word Translation in Storyline 360 (Build 3.49.24347.0), making exporting and importing Word documents so much easier!

There are many benefits to this feature, but one is preserved formatting! The legacy Word translation method removed some text formatting, such as lists and paragraph spacing. The new Word translation method preserves all text formatting, so you don’t have to spend time and effort correcting it.

Lastly, to take advantage of this feature, make sure you've updated Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app!
