Button that does not count towards simulation quiz attempts

Nov 13, 2020

Hello,

We have multiple slides with graded simulation questions. On each slide, the learner is allowed 2 attempts to perform the correct action. We also have a 'help' button on the slide with some additional information.

Currently, it seems that clicking the 'help' button counts towards the allowed attempts. We tried just using layers and have tried lightbox slides.

How can we allow the learner to use the help button without it counting towards the attempts? Is there a trigger or variable we could build that would keep the clicking of this item from counting towards the attempts?
Thanks in advance for your creative guidance (easy solutions are welcome too!)

Hi, Jessica,

It sounds like the program counts the click as an attempt to perform the designated action.

Could you put the Help info into the Hover state, so the user wouldn't have to click to see it? (Caveat: you'd have to warn folks that they clicking the Help button will count as a "wrong" attempt. And, if you're providing immediate feedback after the 2 attempts, you might want to program it to show a special note if one of the wrong clicks was on the Help button, and remind them to Hover only.)

Agree. It'd take a lot of concentration to not click the Help button when needed.

It seems like what you want should be doable, but it'd have to done with a completely custom-built slide. However, then you couldn't directly track it, because the Results slide only recognizes question slides (default or freeform).

Though maybe you could program it so that what the user does on the slide selects or deselects buttons that are off the slide, and those off-the-slide buttons are used to submit the answer.

Good luck!
