Can't insert a video from file consistently.

May 17, 2018

My team recently upgraded to SL3 from SL2. Most operations are the same, but always a few things run differently.

One problem that I have repeatedly had is inserting a video successfully on a consistent basis. I go to Insert tab > Video > Video from File > select the correct file. So I know I have the navigation down. This is the same as SL2.

I have experienced this problem with both large and extremely small files: both with the same problem. All looks successful, but all that is 'loaded' is a small gray box that says 'video.' The timeline file says SWF.

However, if I close down the program and open it again, I can load a video successfully. Typically if I don't do anything else on the slide and load the video first.

Does anyone have any work-arounds? I am on a project loading several very small videos for a computer simulation. I really don't want to close my file multiple times to create my simulation. It is such a hassle!

Hi Debbie,

Is this only happening when inserting SWF videos, or any file types? I haven't seen or heard of a similar issue, so I'd probably want to start by testing one of your files to see if I can recreate it. Where are you pulling the video files from, are they stored on your local hard drive?

Also, can you check that you're on the latest update of Storyline 3, Update 4?

Hi there Debbie! Sorry to hear Storyline is making you jump through hoops just to insert a video--I know that's got to be irritating! I'm happy to help you get this straightened out.

First, what kind of video files are you using? Are they MP4, SWF, or something else?

Also, does this problem happen if you insert a video in a new, blank Storyline file?

I finally located something that indicated which version I am on: Update 2: 3.2.13213.0, so it doesn't look like the most recent. I'll reach out to my IT department to obtain the update.

I am mostly downloading MP4 files, located on my hard drive, mostly created from Camtasia. But a few videos from Getty, which are QuickTime Movies, do not load either. (I have just screen recorded in Camtasia for a work around and didn't relate the two as possibly the same issue as they act differently.)

I was successful in starting with a new blank SL file, added some shapes, images, text and was still able to add 3 of the same videos I am working on with no issues.

I would be happy to share the file if you send me a good place to send it.

Thanks for those additional details, Debbie!

It sounds like this is an issue with one particular Storyline file, since you had no problem inserting the videos into a new file.

If you're still having trouble after updating to the most recent version, please share you Storyline file and the video files with our team by clicking here. We'll take a closer look!

Thank you, I will. When IT reaches out and helps me, I will let you know if the problem persists.

But to clarify, it has been in several different Storyline files that I have had this issue with since we updated to SL3. As an example, this morning I was able to insert about 10 - 1 to 2 second video files (with no other formatting actions) before it called uncle.

With the sample, I only tried to do a little formatting between each insertion, and stopped after 3 insertions. I am not at all confident that if I started building a course in the new file that it would give me different results. Perhaps the updates will fix my issue.

Hey Debbie,

Be sure to let us know how the update works for you. This will also repair your install when you update, so fresh software is good too :)

As Ashley first mentioned, please be sure that you are working off of your local drive as well.
