I'd also make sure you're using the latest update of your Storyline version (Storyline 360,build 3.26.18364.0 or Storyline 3, build 3.6.18134.0) and working on local files, as working from a network/shared drive is known to cause that red X ultimately leading to corruption.

try closing storyline and then close other programs that you may have open then reopen SL - sounds like a resources issue
