Can't send a numeric variable to LMS

Nov 07, 2018

Hello, Heroes.

I would want to know how did you achieve to send a variable value by doing this tutorial.

In SL2 worked very fine, but in SL3 the thing changed a little bit, but I can't make it work.

In the preview when the course arrives to the How many slide, the flow is stopped by the "You must complete the test to continue" messsage. Unless I set a value and send manually. With the Essay slide I have no problems.

I added an attachment what I'm doing.

Thanks!

Hi Llorinder,

Thanks for reaching out and allowing us to take a look at your sample file.

I was getting the same error you mentioned.

The first slide was set up as a question slide, but did not have a designated answer, so that's why an answer wasn't being recognized.

If you remove the freeform part of the slide, it seems to work as you designated.

Let me know if that's the behavior you were looking for.

Hi, Llorinder!  Thanks for clarifying, and no worries about the english.  You're doing great!

I saw what was happening in your file.  You'd like to report 0 if the user does nothing on the "click" slide, or to report the value (1) if they click.

I saw 2 issues:

  1. The second slide was a How Many survey slide (numeric entry), and that kind of slide requires the learner to manually click or enter a value in the entry field.
  2. The first slide was a Pick One, and it wouldn't progress without the error message if the learner didn't click the button.

Here's how I solved these issues.

  1. Instead of using a How Many survey slide, I used a Short Answer survey slide.  You can still adjust the text variable for this slide to show a number without manually entering it.

Here's the catch:  You can't adjust a text variable to equal the value of a numeric variable.  😱  So you have to make the entry field on the first slide a Text Entry field as well.  You can set the default of the text variable to 0 on the first slide.
  2. Once I made those changes, including changing the entry on the first slide to a text entry, I needed to fix the Pick One setup.  I added the button as the "correct" answer choice in Form View.  Then, I need to account for the learner not clicking the button.  No problem -- I added a trigger to change the state of the button to Selected when the user clicks the Submit button.  And, I made sure that trigger came before the "submit the interaction" trigger.

Check out my attached example file.  I tried to keep the setup as close to what you have as possible.  And here's where you can play with it live!  Let me know if that works for you.  Hopefully you can make those switches in your course without too much trouble.

Hi Llorinder,

Good news! We fixed the issue where setting the numeric data entry variable to zero won't display in the numeric entry field.

Here's how to install the latest Storyline 360 update to see all the recent enhancements and fixes.

If the problem reappears, please connect with our team, or share a screen recording here, and we'll be happy to help!
