Cannot save .story file due to repeated error message

Oct 10, 2016

I have gotten the same error message several times today when trying to save a project. I have been using Storyline for a year and working on this project for a couple months - this is the first time I have seen it, but it is now persistent and will not stop. "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

Error message

It will not allow me to Save As anything else. If I cancel out, I can close the project, but not save any work progress. I have tried closing every other application, closing/restarting Storyline, rebooting, and reinstalling Storyline from scratch. I thought I had a fix after I reinstalled, but the error message came back after 30 minutes. I can't find anything in the Heroes archive that addresses this specific problem.

All other functionality within Storyline seems fine, but there is no point continuing to work if I can't save anything.

Hi Carla,

Thanks for reaching out here about this, that's definitely a frustrating error to keep encountering. It sounds as though there's something happening that's leading your file to become corrupt. Are you working from a local drive or a network drive? Are you running the latest update for Storyline 2, update 11? Is this happening with any file you're working on, or just the one? If it's just the one, you may want to try importing your slides into a new file entirely and working from the new file. You'll also want to make sure to follow the guidelines here to reduce your risk of this continuing to happen. Let me know if you have questions! :)

Hi Carla, thanks for the additional details here. Since it's happening with all your files, I would recommend running this repair on your software to fix this erratic behavior. Keep me posted on how that goes!

If you run into any issues, or you continue to experience these problems after running the repair, you'll want to reach out to our Support Engineers directly by way of this form. They'll be able to troubleshoot with you further to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible. If you go this route, you can let me know your case number here and I'll be sure to follow along as well. :)

For anyone else who finds this thread, the problem was solved by uninstalling a recently acquired security program.

During a Facebook Messenger for Desktop software update last week, an unwanted and unexpected malware detection program called Bytefence piggybacked into my computer. I hadn't even opened or run the program, but the presence of Bytefence prevented Storyline from being able to save. As soon as I deleted Bytefence, Storyline started working perfectly again.
