I have been racking my brain for about 3 hours on this. I have a slide that after 6 seconds I want it to appear and then disappear only to display a second image. I've tried the states, triggers, layers and have been unsuccessful. I think my problem is that I don't want the user to have to hover or click anywhere on the slide, I just want the picture to transition in, then out and display a new image on the same slide. HELP!
Yes, thank you!! I didn't realize I had to see it in preview mode to see the full effect. i was previewing it from the Timeline, which didn't change :(

Great question and unless I'm misunderstanding, you should be able to do this.
I made a quick example using characters and having the state change when the timeline reaches 3 seconds.
No click needed from the user at all :)
