Change hand cursor to a different cursor when mouse hovers over a hotspot

Dec 08, 2017

I try to use different styles of cursor in a Try Mode Simulation. What I want to achieve is to have a specific cursor according to the area you hover. I insert a hotspot over each area.

If I could just change the hand cursor showed over the hotspot into a different cursor, I would have the exact result I am looking for.

Could someone propose a way to achieve that?

Thank you very much.

Hi Stephanie,

Happy to help you here!

First, if you have any triggers that say, "Change state of the shape to 'hover' when the mouse hovers over," you can delete those triggers.

Next, add a 'selected' state that matches the 'normal' state. This will cause the mouse cursor to change to a hand cursor when the mouse hovers over. This short video demo explains what I mean.

Give it a try, and let me know if you need any help along the way!

Articulate...how is a hotspot any different than a transparent shape with triggers? Shouldn't a hotspot by default NOT have the hand icon when you hover over it to indicate that it is clickable? If, for instance, I'm testing someone's ability to click on the correct item in an image, I don't want to give away the answer by changing the mouse cursor to a hand when they happen to accidentally hover over it.

Hi Artur,

I created a test file to demo a few scenarios based on your question. Perhaps using a different question/slide type will work better for what you'd like to design.

  • Slide 1 - hotspot over an image vs. an image with a transparent shape and states
    • As you mentioned, the hotspot will show the hand cursor
  • Slide 2 - A freeform pick-one question type
    • Again, shows the hand cursor on clickable items
  • Slide 3 - Freeform hotspot
    • This is the one that you may be looking for. The hand cursor stays present, indicating that I need to click, but shows for the entire image, so no clues are given.

Hi Artur,

Unfortunately, this isn't the default setting so you have to do this on each hotspot but if you right-click on the hot spot, you have the option to NOT show the hand cursor. Is that what you are looking for?  I tried using the format painter but that doesn't work so you have to do it manually for each hotspot. I wish this was something that we could choose globally for our project.
