Can I pick a new slide template for a slide I'm already working on? For example, I would like to switch from the chalkboard template to the whiteboard template. I can find options to change the layout, but not the template.
I do not think so - these Tamplates are basically collections of images and layers etc. so I think you need to create a new slide with correct template, copy over assets, and then delete the old slide.
If I am understanding you correctly, you would have add another slide master with the new template style, then apply the appropriate layout. There is some funkiness with adding slide masters or trying to change them. I did a post a while back with a screencast that had a work-around. I will see if I can find it.
Thinking about it though, the caveat is probably what you are finding - that your placeholders and such do not move with the new template. You can select the layout and it just adds the new placeholders I think. I might have to try it again and see if that is true.
By mistake, i've used a keyboard shortcut from captivate when i was editing a screen recordind: Ctrl+M (in Captivate it's merging one image to another), the result was the insert slide wizard

May be wrong but that's what I understand.

Found it. This was the thread I started and I think it might help with what you are trying.
