Closed captions not working

Feb 13, 2018

Is anyone else experiencing closed captions not working in SL 360?

I have my captions option checked in player, added CC for my audio but they just don't appear on the slide. I've added plenty of CC before so it's annoying it's not working anymore.

Here's a test file if anyone would like to take a look.

Hi, everyone!

I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 73, we’ve included important fixes and new features!

One new feature we’ve included:

Boost video accessibility by including closed captions when publishing projects as MP4 video files.

To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.

Please let me know if you need additional help!

Hi Joanna,

Sorry that you've run into an issue with your closed captions.

We are aware of an issue that is affecting viewing the Closed Captions in Preview, but they should be working when you publish your file.

I know that's inconvenient for testing and we are working on the issue.

I'll add this thread so that we can update you here as soon as we can.

Thanks for your persistence Joanna :)

I was testing in Chrome and verified in Edge, but you're right - the HTML5 version is not displaying the Closed Captions in IE11.

The good news is, our team is already working on this and we should have an update to provide soon.

I'll add this thread, so that we can let you know right here :)

Hey everybody. I'm excited to let you know that we just released update 13 for Storyline 360! It includes new features and fixes - check them all out here.

One of the fixes addresses an issue where closed captions were not always showing in Preview or in some browsers with HTML5 output.

Here’s how you can update Storyline 360 to take advantage of everything the latest release has to offer. Let me know how you make out!

Hello. I'm having s imilar issue with captions not showing when publishing as a Video on my Microsoft video player. They show fine in Preview and in Articulate Review.

The player settings seem to be correct but no CC option shows in the Mp4. The only clue I can see is there is a menu item where it asks the use to "choose a subtitle file".  Any help is appreciated.

Hi David and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Publishing your Storyline course to Video removes any interactivity, so your learners would not be able to click your closed caption button in your player.

You can, however, add a trigger to your automatically turn the captions on and they will display when you publish your course to video. Check out the instructions here.

David Celerity

Thank you. I'm new to the entire e-Learning world.

I followed the instructions except for the Tip stating "You need to import at least one caption file into your project to see the built-in caption variable." I don't know what that means since I already have individual audio tracks and captions for each slide.

Do I need to record an audio file that covers the duration of the story (1:17 in length) and then include that somehow when I publish? Thanks for your help.

Hi David, I think this is an outdated instruction. When the closed captioning feature was first released there was no caption edior in Storyline. You had to create the captions in a separate file and then import them into Storyline.

If you have added captions to your audio, you should be able to see the caption button when you preview or publish your course.

David Celerity

Leslie - I did follow the instructions for the trigger as you can see in my file. I don't know if this is an apple-to-apple comparison since you embedded a video within your story where I just added audio tracks and captions to slides before publishing. I'm eager to learn.

Aha! It is performing differently, David. Thanks for sharing that file so that I could take a look.

I see that we have a feature request in place for the captions to display as expected when publishing to MP4.

I'm adding this conversation to the report so that I can update you when we have additional information to share.

Hi, I am facing the same issue but its different. After publish, CC not displaying in the first slide other slides are working fine. But I can see the CC while previewing the course.

And, another issue is CC is not displayed fully. Its cut the end. Why it's happening. My audio layer is on top only.

These issues have happened in chrome only. Firefox working well.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Ravi,

I'd love to help - since your issue seems different than what other folks have discussed here it would help to know a bit more about your file and environment.

Can you let me know what update of Storyline 360 you're using? The latest is build 3.20.16814.0 and you can check by going to the "Help" Tab -> "About Articulate Storyline".

Also, what version of Chrome are you viewing the published course in? Did you upload it to your web server, LMS or are you testing it locally?

Lastly, if you can share the .story file that'll help us take a look at your particular setup.
