Course launch URL opens in Chrome not IE

Jul 07, 2020

I have published an SL360 course to our SumTotal LMS -- let's call it Course A. The last page in Course A has the learner make a selection. Selection 1 is set to automatically launch Course B -- button trigger is set to "Complete course as Completed/Passed" and then to open the URL to Course B in the same window. Selection 2 is set to automatically launch Course C using button triggers with URL going to Course C in the same window.

This works flawlessly using Chrome. However, when I launch Course A in IE11 and select the button for either course B or C, I get the message "Content has ended, you may close the window." This is the message I would typically see when I complete and exit a normal course (one without the URL to another course). It is apparent that it's not even trying to launch Course B or C.

Any ideas? I know just the basics of java scripting but am unable to pinpoint the issue when I debug the course in IE. My thought is it has to be a security setting in IE, but I'm not sure where to start.

Hi Scott,

Thank you for reaching out!

I first wanted to share that we have seen similar behavior when using the Jump to URL trigger that is set to launch in the same tab/window. I'll be sure to bring this thread to our team about the behavior you are seeing.

In the meantime, if you change the Jump to URL trigger settings to Display in a new browser window, this should clear the snag you are experiencing:

Thanks Vincent.  I've been out of the office for awhile and just getting back to this.  While that would be an easy fix, my client is wanting it to launch in the same window - not negotiable.  Unfortunately this appears to be an issue within IE that is preventing the same-window launch.  Just cannot figure out what that setting would be or if there is even a fix.  I suspect there is some sort of hard-coded JavaScript fix but I have been unable to locate a solution both here and doing internet searches.  I just tried resetting the IE tab feature so that links opened in the same tab but that did not work either.  That would not be an ideal solution anyway as it would require IE settings changes to thousands of computers and the client company is not going to allow that.
