Course Marking Failed in Workday

Oct 03, 2022

I'm not positive if this is an Articulate issue or a Workday LMS issue. I have a course that has a pre-assessment and a final assessment. The learners must pass one or the other to get to an acknowledgement. After the acknowledgment, I have a final slide where I use the course completion trigger. Our LMS team has found that when the learners fail the final assessment and exit the course, they're seeing a message in Workday saying they've failed and need to retake the entire course instead of saying the course is incomplete.

Have you seen this with other clients that use Workday? This was new to our LMS team, but we aren't sure if this is due to the course completion trigger (I'm not tracking the assessments) or a Workday issue.

Thanks!

Hi Wendy,

Just to add to the discussion, you can also test your course in SCORM Cloud to see if the behavior you're encountering is specific to your LMS.

Hi Leah,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue! Have you tried the troubleshooting steps Joe shared above?

  • If your course works properly in SCORM Cloud, I recommend contacting your LMS provider to troubleshoot the issue. They'll know how best to help with LMS-specific problems.
  • If your Articulate content doesn't play correctly in SCORM Cloud, submit a case to our support team so we can take a closer look!

Hello -
I am having the same issue is Workday Learning. The learner is getting a FAIL mark when they have not completed the course. It is set to completed based on the final assessment. There are 3 knowledge checks that do have results slides but are not tracked. If the learner closed out before they finish, they see a Fail.
Possibly related issue is that the course freezes if the learner fails a knowledge check then retakes and passes. It happens seemingly intermittently but almost always when a learner fails, then retakes, gets one question wrong on the first attempt and correct on the second. It will freeze before the results slide and they have to close out and come  back and NOT resume, they have to restart or it will stay frozen.

I tested in SCORM cloud and the course acts the same, fail if closed before completion and stalls when knowledge check failed, retaken and passed. Even when completed successfully, the failed status remains.

The course is set Passed/Incompleted. Only the final assessment is tracked.

It seems that having multiple results slides is an issue. I have also tried to change the revisit options. It seemed to work at first when set to reset to initial state, but after more testing we had the same results.
I removed all the removed all result slides except the final assessment and set to complete./incomplete and while it did not freeze, it still reports a failed status. This happened in the LMS and SCORM Cloud.

This is an example of one set to pass/fail, SCORM 2004, 4th, completion set to final assessment. This has the freezing issue and failure issue.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I should note I did create a copy and publish, and I recreated all the knowledge checks. No success.

Do you mind sharing your .story file or at least a screenshot of relevant points such as tracking options in Storyline, course completion triggers if any etc. What exactly would you like to happen? What would be your perfect scenario? I have not experienced the freezing issue; the failure issue is confirmed. I am willing to test it out for you to achieve what you are looking for. Although I can possibly make it work in the ScormCloud I can't guarantee that it would work the same in your LMS.

Also, very informative articles 1, 2

Hi Liz!

Happy to jump in and help with this!

If you would like to allow your learner multiple attempts at answering a quiz question, select one of your question slides and navigate to the Question Tools/Design tab. There you will see Scoring with a corresponding drop-down menu for attempts. I went ahead and adjusted all of the question slides in your file to 'Unlimited' attempts.

Unlimited Attempts

To your second question, I can confirm you had the correct LMS Reporting settings in place as it was set to Completed/Incomplete.

LMS_REPORTING

While testing the file with SCORM Cloud, I closed out of the lesson after answering two questions and did not receive a pass or fail status. Just 'incomplete'.

SCORM_Report

If you notice unexpected behavior when uploading this file to your LMS, then the issue is likely LMS-based. I can confirm your revised .story file is now working as intended and I've attached a copy for your reference.

Please let me know if you need anything else!

Thanks for the insights! The questions are set to allow 2 attempts then the incorrect feedback is provided. The knowledge checks have unlimited attempts. I was also able to close and not get the Fail in SCORM Cloud and in our LMS. I believe the issue was that I had to delete the triggers to submit results on the KCs, they had been inactivated. Once I deleted the triggers it stopped failing.

The remaining issue is the course freezing when a learner completes a knowledge check and fails, then retakes it and passes. After selecting Continue on the Correct feedback layer of the final question the course stalls. The only way to unlock it is to close, relaunch and select to NOT resume. If you resume it is a blank slide and you cannot navigate. That is happening with course in SCORM Cloud as well as with the LMS. It also happens in Review 360 and even when previewing.

This is happening with other courses as well. Any help here is greatly appreciated!

Hi Liz,

The course freezing issue was caused by the storyline error (attached screenshot). I generated new result slides and triggers with the same functionality as in your original project. I tested the course in ScormCloud a few times and the freezing issue seems to be gone. The LMS reporting is set to Completed/Incomplete. The course will be marked as complete when the learner  completes a quiz "Course Acknowledgement" - Pre-check. I used "Pre-check" to make sure the course is not complete if the learner select ''No" and then exit the course. Please feel free to test this out on the link below or download the attached revised .story file.

Hi Marie!

It sounds like your LMS (Workday) is reporting learner's scores incorrectly. Sorry to hear that, but I'd be happy to assist!

A helpful troubleshooting step would be to first test your course with SCORM Cloud. Which is a virtual LMS environment we use to determine if an issue lies with a customer's .story file, or the LMS itself. If you test your course in SCORM Cloud and the reporting status works as intended, then your issue is likely LMS-based.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Thank you for the email. I did test the file in SCORM Cloud. The file was fine; however, the issue was it was saved as 2004 SCORM edition 3. I retested SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 edition 4. Both of these files worked as expected in Workday. The chatter in Workday is that Edition 4 of SCORM 2004 works with Workday but Editions 2 and 3 can have issues.
