Creating Triggers with Video

Jul 10, 2019

I am trying to create a quiz with a video that I have made. I would like for the video to pause and multiple-choice question set appear. When the correct answer is selected I would like for the video to continue until the next question.

  1. Break the video into segments.  You can use SL's builtin trim tool by editing the video.
  2. Place the first segment on the first slide and set it to play automatically.   You can right-click the video and use the SET POSTER FRAME option to put a specific image onscreen when the video stops at the end, it doesn't have to be the last frame of the video.  Up to you.
  3. Set your question in a layer over the video and set the layer to appear when the video segment ends.
  4. Finish your question as desired.
  5. Set the next segment of video on the next slide and go through the steps above.
  6. Lather, rinse, repeat.

With a little fiddling you can get the effect of the video pausing and resuming even though it's separte segments.

Ren's linked tutorial includes a great technique to accomplish your paused videos, using layers to:

  1. Appear at specific cue moments in the base video timeline
  2. Pause the base later at the same time
  3. The layer content can easily mimic a question with correct/incorrect feedback, then hiding that layer would cause the base layer to resume automatically.
