Custom Button management

I've tried some custom (GOTO Slide X) buttons and have gotten them to appear on the opening slide at the start of the course, change state to hidden 8 seconds into the course and reappear at the end. At the end of the course they work as expected (this took a loooong time to get right and it had to do with them extending beyond the end time of the slide.
Problem now is I need the user to be able to select one of them during that opening 8 seconds they are visible. I've tried keeping them on the timeline the full length of the slide and also making them only visible/available for the first 8 seconds. No matter what I do, they do not appear as buttons (i.e. clickable) during that first 8 seconds. Will I have to make two separate buttons? Seems an odd solution.
