Customization Page

Feb 19, 2015

Our Team purchased a template eLearning that we are supposed to be able to reuse in a variety of situations. The company that created the template provided a fairly lengthy instruction manual on how to customize it to our specific needs.

Here is my idea. I would like to create a "hidden" page for designers to use where they would enter in different dialogs or change the introduction things like that. I'd also like them to be able to change the value of a number that would change different "physical" aspects of the eLearning. Like if I enter a value of 3 I get a 3 question quiz but if I enter a value of 4 I will get a 4 question quiz.

I understand the basic nuts and bolts of what I'm trying to do. I'm just running across one problem.

Is there an easy way to change the value of a variable whether text or number? Preferably by entering a value into a textbox on the "customization" page.
What is the easiest way to change the values of the variable?
Keep in mind these variables are not for the learning to enter data. They are for the designer to set a value or text that would be referenced by the main part of the eLearning.

Hi Eric,

And welcome to the Heroes community!

I think I understand what you're hoping to accomplish, but that's not something that we support on the designer end.  I think you could probably accomplish something similar within a course itself (having the learner enter some data and then the course changes as a result).  But when it comes to actually building the course on the front end, there's no plug-in that would allow a designer to enter some data and then have the course sculpt itself in the manner that you're seeking.  That sounds more like a templated approach (ala Engage) whereas Storyline is a roll your own tool.

This might be something that you inquire about from the organization that you purchased the template from.

I hope this helps!

It may be possible to build somethings based on variables. Then have the designer set a starting variable that doesn't get modified by the end user.

Essentially, they would create a trigger to set the variable to X at course start. Then publish and the course they build has that trigger.

The next designer could use the same course, but set the trigger to set variable to Y which changes the way the course behaves. They'd publish.

The end user never gets an opportunity to adjust the variable. But the designer could. It requires that the course designer build alternative layers/states or scenes to accomodate the different needs and then creates triggers to go to those layers/states based on the value of the variable.
