Dead Links in Published Version

Mar 27, 2013

I have a course with several documents linked as references. All but 3 of them are working fine. I double checked the links to be sure I linked to the correct document...I did. And I'm viewing the course from the Articulate temp storage site. All the docs are PDFs and rest are showing up with no problem. Any ideas?

Hi Lynn,

You're viewing the content from Tempshare, correct?

Try to make sure that there are no special characters in the names of the documents you're attaching. If there are any extra spaces, underscores, or any other special characters in the file names, you can run into some issues when trying to view them.

If the file names check out, are you able to share the .STORY file here so I can take a look? If you prefer, you're welcome to share it with our support team privately

Thanks!

Good morning Lynn,

I'm looking at the file now and I do see some differences in the hyperlinks you're using.

For example, the link on slide 1.14 is an actual hyperlink, while the one in 1.4 links to a local file on your hard drive (which obviously won't work for me, because I don't have access to that hard drive).

There's a couple of things we can try to get this working for you. The first (and in my opinion the easiest) way would be to upload those PDF files to your web server and link to them as actual URL paths.

The second method was posted by Jeanette in the following thread:

Launching a pdf via button click

Since I don't have access to the actual PDF files, I cannot test these out for you. Can you take a look and see if either of these work for your course?

Thanks!

Lynn Hauser

Correct. 1.14 is a hyperlink to a website, but it's the only one. All the other links in the project are to PDFs in a folder. But....all of them work except for these three.

I did it exactly how the tutorial you sent described and all but 3 docs were linked properly. But now something very weird has happened. I planned to send the link for the tempshare file so you could see how the other linked docs worked, except now none of them are working. This is very frustrating and I'm not sure what to do to fix it.

Any way you can share one of the PDF files with me? I'm wondering if it may be an issue with hosting it on Tempshare.

I can try to link to the file in the course and upload it to one of our servers, if you'd like.

I know you're in a rush with this. If you'd like, you might want to go ahead and submit this to our support team. Couldn't hurt to have them take a look as well.

Hopefully we'll be able to get this working for you quickly.

Thanks!

Lynn Hauser

Christine,

I just reinserted the links. Some work, some don't.

Here's the tempshare link so you can see:

http://tempshare.storyline.articulate.com/p17moov9v04rpklp1chf1pgg12601/story.html

I've uploaded the files that don't work. I also added one (Learning Activities Additional Tips) that does work so you can see if there's a difference.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for the files! I took the last file you uploaded (Cultural Impact) and inserted it on the button for slide 1.20. I've uploaded the course to Articulate Online and it seems to be working there.

Take a look:

Testing for Lynn

Please note that I didn't change the others in this modified version, only the Cultural Impact PDF.

Next, I zipped and uploaded the course to Tempshare. The link does not work here.

Take a look:

Tempshare Testing for Lynn

Where do you plan on hosting the content when you've finished with the course? Are you able to upload the content to that host temporarily to test the links?

Lynn Hauser

I don't really have anywhere to upload it. I did this so that I could learn the software in the event I have an opportunity to do an e-learning project. This was training that I developed for a client several years ago as a PPT based training. I wanted to see how I could convert it to Articulate.

I've got a few of the smaller samples I did on my website but I have no idea how my web designer put them up there.

I don't understand why some of them work on tempshare and others don't. I especially don't understand why some of them worked yesterday when I first published and uploaded it but now they don't.

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Lynn,

Tempshare is available for testing projects, I honestly haven't heard of any issues prior to this where document links haven't worked, but it seems to be the case. In either case, it's always better to test your content in your "final" environment.

If you do have access to a web designer that can upload the content to your site, that's awesome. All you'd need to do is publish for the web, and have them upload the content to the server.

Now, an even easier option for you may be to use Articulate Online for testing your content. There's actually a free trial available, so that may be a great option for you right now, until you know how you want to distribute your content in the future. You can upload your content directly from Storyline to Articulate Online, so there's no sharing of the files or working with the web designer to get your content up and running. This is actually the host I used earlier, where the links worked quite well.

If you'd like to try it out, click the link below:

If you have any trouble with this, just let me know. I'll try my best to help you get this up and running

Thanks!

Lynn,

Can you share the link for the course you uploaded to Articulate Online, please?

Also, please specify which slides and links aren't working now.

If you could make a .ZIP file with the PDF files that aren't linking and include the .STORY file, I'll try to see if I can get it working and share the modified file with you.

Lynn Hauser

Here are the files and the link.

The slide numbers with the problem slides are different than in the online version. The online version is the entire project but the zip file contains only the problem modules as the full project is too large to send in the message.

Common Mistakes Case Study is slide 7.4 in full version; 2.4 in zip file

Common Mistakes Case Study answers is same slide

White Paper - Adults as learners is 2.4 in online and 1.4 in zip

Motivating Adult Learners is 2.12/1.12

CEI Development Guidelines is 3.2 in both versions

You've been amazingly helpful...thanks so much.

Christine Hendrickson

Hi Lynn!

Sorry to ask for more again, but without all the files it's a little difficult to update or modify the links. I only see the .STORY file in the last post.

There is a bit of a limit on the forums, so if you'd like, you can submit a case with the .ZIP file. If you can share the case number that gets assigned to the case, I can pull the documents from there.

You'll be able to attach the .ZIP (please include the .STORY file and the PDF files that aren't working in the course that you listed above) on the second page of the following form:

Hi Lynn,

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I believe I finally found the issue for the links. It looks like it may be an issue with the file names for the PDF files.

I pulled the trouble slides into a new course, so I could focus on those slides. I removed the additional spaces in the PDF names and reinserted the links and now all of the links seem to be working.

Here's the Articulate Online version:

Articulate Online upload - Testing for Lynn

Even better news? Now it's working in Tempshare, as well:

Tempshare upload - Testing for Lynn

I'm also attaching the modified version of the course, just in case you want to take a closer look at how I have it set up.

So, what you'll want to do is rename the PDF files and remove any spaces. Also, making the file names shorter may help, as well. Remove the original links and insert a new link to the renamed PDF files. Save the project and upload to either Articulate Online or Tempshare.

If you run into any trouble, try clearing your browser cache.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. Let me know how it goes!

Christine Hendrickson

Good morning Lynn,

Awesome! Very happy to hear it's working for you now To be honest, I did have to kick myself a little for not thinking about the names in the first place. When I didn't see any underscores, I figured they were fine.

I appreciate your patience with this, thanks so much for taking the time to share the files and for keeping me updated.

I hope you have a wonderful Friday!

Christine
