One way to create visible hotspots is using objects with transparent fills. This will also allow for some styles for indicating selection and button groups will let you have one at a time highlighted, toggling the others off.
See the attached. This one also uses layers to pop up additional info.

Hotspots are invisible in the published/previewed slide they're useful for adding triggers to an area without having to make invisible shapes.

Thanks Alex. So that's not what I want. I would be interested in seeing some examples of how to use hotspots.
