Do objects have to be clickable to get the yellow highlight with the tab key?

May 30, 2023

I've been testing some slides for accessibility with screen readers. I've noticed that only objects that have a trigger to make them clickable/selectable get highlighted with the yellow box when I use the tab key, even though other objects have clearly been added to the focus order. Will the objects that don't get highlighted still be read by the screen reader as long as they are in the focus order, even though they don't get the yellow highlight? Does the yellow highlight just indicate that it can be selected?

Hello Scott,

Thanks for reaching out!

Yes, you are correct, you can only tab through interactive objects. The tab key only focuses on interactive objects in the slide, presents the Skip Navigation shortcut, and then immediately jumps to the Next slide button on the player, reducing the number of keystrokes needed to move to the next slide. This behavior is explained in this article:

The objects that do not get highlighted can still be read, through the use of the up and down arrow keys.

Hope this helps!
