Drag and Drop Items - Can we have the state stay normal after it has been dropped?

Jan 30, 2024

Hi All

I am working on a Drag and Drop activity where all the drag items don't fit on one slide. One idea I had was to make the states of some of the drag items hidden and use a couple of trigger buttons to toggle the visibility.

One problem is that the dropped items need to stay visible, regardless of which set of drag items we want visible.

I did try the Drag and Drop setting where you only see one drag item at a time. I am hoping there would be something similar but for groupsets of drag items.

Please click on the Review 360 link to see what I mean: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/807ea033-8a43-44f8-8938-051835150314/review

Slide 1: How I want the slide to look like.
Slide 2: Shows how it works when the visibility is toggled.
Slide 3: Shows the setting for one drag item at a time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi Christine!

It sounds like you had questions about configuring a specific drag-and-drop scenario in Storyline. Happy to help with that!

I wanted to share a workaround solution you may find useful. The attached example makes use of Motion Path Animations, to show more options that can be dragged and dropped onto the target. If that doesn't work for you, would you mind elaborating a bit more on the type of functionality you were looking to achieve?

Thank you! Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Steven

Thank you for the help! Apologies for the late reply, was just in the process of moving home.

To give an idea of the reason, I have 16 drag items that need to be dropped on a specific spot on a 4 x 4 grid (it is a table with 5 columns and 5 rows). But the grid is pretty big, which means there is not enough space for all the drag items on one slide. I need a work around to have the user click to view the other answer options. The issue is that once the item is dropped, it needs to stop moving and stay visible.

I think your workaround will work - will have to play around with the Motion Path Animations to test if it will work.

Kind regards

Hi

Update from my end. I tested motion paths and it seems to work. I made another proof of concept experiment. It is Slide 4 on the following link. Slides 1-3 is the same as the initial post.

The activity needs some fine-tuning, but it could work for my exercise. I have three batches of answers that need to be shown at different times. And it looks like the clicking the arrow does move it after it has been dropped, but they can just redo the drop actions then. One issue is that it does sometimes glitch if the arrow is clicked multiple times. Don't know if exporting it will fix it - any idea why this happens?

Mind trying it out and letting me know if there is anything that could affect the drag and drop actions? I know I have to make a redo button and the layout is imperfect. I am wondering if I missed anything else.

Hello Christine,

I tested your link on my end but I couldn't get the left and right arrow keys to glitch after clicking on them rapidly and in quick succession. Would you mind making a Peek 360 recording of the behavior as well as a copy of your project file so we can take a closer look at what's happening? We'll delete it when we're done testing!
