Drag-and-Flop Histogram

Apr 03, 2014

Hi all,

Long time reader, first-time asker.  I tried searching the forums and could not find anything relevant to this, but if I missed it, please redirect me.

I am trying to do a build-a-histogram quiz question using drag and drop.  The idea is that the student is given the frequency distribution and the bars of a corresponding histogram will be shuffled.  I would like the student to rearrange the bars so they are in the correct place based on the table.  I created the bars (labeled in the attached file as 'Class #') and transparent drop targets (labeled 'answer space #').  I tried using the 'snap' object to the drop target but that made the bars land in strange places.  So then I tried using a 'free' drop option, hoping approximate success would be acceptable, but even when I drag and drop the objects very near where they're meant to be, I get an 'Incorrect' result.

I got an 'Aha' and tried creating drag groups the full size of the drop targets (slide 2), but it seems equally not-quite-right.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The main issue is that the drag and drops are not the same size.  Right now they are set to shuffle and snap to center.  When they shuffle, they will alight to the top of the other shape that was in that place. So if you have a tall bar that is replacing a small bar, it will align to the top of the small bar. You have to make them all the same size. This will also fix the snapping to the center of the drop area. You can do this (like in my example) by creating the bars as PNG images with a transparent background that is the exact same size as the drop area. This way it will snap to the center and line up.  This will also allow it to shuffle correctly.  Attached is the sample I fixed.  There are still some things to work out. You don't have much room, so the drag items are gonna be all over each other.
