Duplicate Layer Issue

Oct 05, 2022

When I duplicate a layer, the copied layer has a different slide format.

First, why does the format not copy?

Second, when I go to try to manually change the slide format to match the base layer, the format is not even available. It is simply not in the list. What is going on?

Hi Robert,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this behavior.

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private so we can take a closer look at what's happening?

Additionally, it would help if we could see a recording of the behavior, so we can test the issue as accurately as possible on our end.

For Articulate 360 subscribers, Peek 360 is the quickest way to record a screencast, and it's available for Windows and Mac. Follow the steps below:

  1. Launch Peek 360 on your computer and click New Recording.

  2. Select the application you want to record, then choose a microphone  (if you have one)  when the recording window appears.

  3. Click the red Record button and reproduce the issue.

  4. When you're finished, click Done on the recording control bar or click the Peek 360 icon in your system tray (by the clock).

  5. You can preview your recording, give it a name, and then click Upload to send it to your Articulate 360 account.

  6. Windows will notify you when it's done uploading, and a link to your screencast will automatically be copied to your clipboard.

  7. Share the link with us.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Definitely "unexpected behavior" if you duplicate a layer and it doesn't look like the original. For that, follow Joe's advice about sharing the file with the support staff, along with a video if possible.

You also asked this:

"Second, when I go to try to manually change the slide format to match the base layer, the format is not even available. It is simply not in the list. What is going on?"

The base layers of slides use Slide Master layouts. Other layers use Feedback Master layouts.

This means that when you go to Apply Layout, you'll see the Slide Master layouts if you're on the base. But you'll only see the Feedback Master layouts if you're on a layer. They aren't interchangeable. If you want a base-like layout for upper layers, you'll need to add that as a new Feedback Master layout.

Is there a way to easily duplicate the Slide Master layouts into the Feedback Master?

It'll likely be a putzy process, going back and forth between views for copying from a Slide layout and pasting to a Feedback layout.

  • It's probably easiest to start by duplicating the existing Blank Feedback layout. (If you insert a new Feedback layout, it'll have the background elements used in the master layout.)
  • Some items can be copied and pasted from a Slide layout to a Feedback layout. But text formatting in the Title text box doesn't transfer correctly.
