Embedded links to Resource documents not working. (e.g., story_content/external_files)

Jul 06, 2020

Links to story_content/external_files/Filename.docx  is not working. I've used this technique successfully in the past. Clicking the link on the slide opens an XML file (see info below).  Clicking the [direct] link in Resources doesn't open the file - it puts the file into Downloads, where you can open it. My first suspicion is the reference to docx files - the client doesn't want to create PDF files. What should I do if the .docx files are protected (my guess)? Thanks!

Hi Jerrie,

Thanks for your post! I'm happy to look into why the resource files aren't working.

A couple of areas to check first:

  • Is the project hosted on a web server or a learning management system?
  • Where are the files stored? If they live on a network drive, try storing them on the C: drive along with the Storyline project.
  • Are the file names long, or do they include special characters, accents, or symbols? Learn more about naming conventions in this Microsoft article.

If everything checks out, are you comfortable with sharing the .story file for a closer look? You can send it privately to us by using this link.
