Embedded video not displaying properly on ipads

Sep 15, 2015

We use vimeo to host our videos for ipad based tablet training, because it saves storage space in our LMS and streams faster.

However, we're having issues with the video displaying off center within the display area on the screen, on ipads only. Videos display just fine on other devices - both using HTML5 and Flash.

In the screen shot you can see how the video initially displays - no play button. It's as if it's displaying partly below the video window. You can swipe up to pull it into view, and then play it. I've tried having the display area sized the same as the video dimensions as well as bigger, but it does the same thing in both cases.

Our users, if they don't realize the issue, end up missing out on content because they think it isn't working.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause this to happen on the ipad? We're using Safari because our network security disables pop ups  in Chrome, and our LMS uses popup windows to launch courses.

Hi Allison,

Thanks for the images. Have you looked to see if it behaves differently outside of your LMS as well? SCORM Cloud is an industry standard for testing SCORM content and a good way to doublecheck that there is no LMS interference either.  Also, you mentioned embedding them - what about adding as a web object instead? That tends to play better across all devices/browsers. If you need to embed it, can you change it's overall size or look into if it's being scaled differently?

I've tested using SCORM Cloud and Articulate Tempshare and found the same issues.

I just tried to add the video as a web object, but it says that the content must be launched in a new browser window. That's already not ideal, but made worse by the fact that Safari asks if you want to launch a new window every time, which would get really annoying in a module with multiple videos.

Hi Allison,

Thanks for that additional information. Have you tested with other Vimeo videos, as it may be that particular one and the settings associated with it? It's not a standard message for a web object video to force itself into a new browser window, and you mentioned the iPad, but I did want to point out that is normal behavior on the iPhone.

If you'd like to share a link to the video I'm also happy to take a look at see if there is anything else I can offer.
