Error Message when opening storyline

Oct 14, 2018

I am trying to make some edits to a few projects I made in September 2018. The message I get says that the project is invalid or corrupt so it cannot be opened. It may be been created in an earlier version of Storyline.

I only updated a week ago. Please, tell me that I do not have to start from scratch for these projects.

Hi there, Colleen!  I know that message is scary to get, especially once you've worked so hard on your course.  Let's try a few tricks to get your project to open.

  • First, make sure your project is saved to the C: drive.  If it is saved to a network or shared drive, copy it down to your C: drive and then try to open it.
  • Open a new Storyline file, and proceed to import the slides from your original file.
  • If neither of the above work, let's try to access a working version of your project.

Here's how to check for a backup copy:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Let me know how you make out!
