evaluating multi-line text entry field

I need a way to evaluate the value of a multi-line text entry field.
I've added a text entry field to a content slide, into which the user is supposed to enter a 3-line address. Field is large enough for multiple lines of text, and pressing Enter key adds a line as expected. Reporting the value of the variable through %variablename% displays the multiline value as expected. This is one of several text entry fields on the slide (simulation of filling out a form) so I'm using triggers to 'submit' the whole form instead of giving feedback on each text field.
Can I set the default value of another variable to include the line breaks for comparison, or use linebreaks in the conditions on a trigger to do the comparison? How else could I make this work?

What's the other variable you're comparing it to? Is that being entered by the user or occurring somewhere else? It may help if you're able to share a sample of this .story file here with us so that we could take a look at what you're setting up.
