External File Links Randomly Broken

Jul 18, 2019

Hello! I have 15 courses (modules in a larger course curriculum) that all need to launch a Powerpoint file. I've followed the steps to attach the file to the Resources tab. Then, created the trigger on a text hyperlink to point to the external files folder in the Storyline output.

We have a two-step process for loading the file into our SuccessFactors LMS:

1. We publish to our local drive and zip the file into AICC, SCORM 1-2 and SCORM 2004.

2. We upload the file to our LMS team's Sharepoint site.

3. The LMS team downloads the ZIP file to their local drive, then upload it to SuccessFactors.

Somewhere along the way, the links to the external files folder gets randomly broken. I don't know if it's a glitch in our download/upload processes (there are, admittedly, three opportunities to have the file get corrupted). Sometimes, the links work. Sometimes they don't. It seems random, so I wonder if it's an issue with how the speed at which the files are uploaded by the network or if it's something else.

Has anyone else experienced this? How do I fix it? These 15 files need to be accessible in our LMS ASAP and I've already spent two days trying to troubleshoot the issue.

Thank you!

Hi there, Sheri!

Sorry you're at this standstill, and I'd be happy to help you sort what's happening. A few clarifying questions to explore our next steps:

  • When you're adding the PowerPoint resources, are you selecting the URL or File option?
  • Are these resources saved on a local/C: drive? Working on a shared drive can cause strange behavior similar to what you're experiencing, so I'd like to rule that out as the culprit.
  • Would you mind sharing your .story file for testing? You can send it to our team by privately by using this upload link. We'll take a closer look and run some tests in another LMS environment, and will delete the file after troubleshooting!
