Failing a learner part-way through a course

Apr 18, 2013

Hi all,

I wanted to get some advice on the following. (Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but I couldn't find it)

I have several compliance based questions to put to the user at different times in the course I want to build. These are mandatory. The user cannot move on until they have answered correctly, and if they answer incorrectly, the automatically fail the course.

How do I build a 1 question quiz that, if failed, sends a failed message to the lms and exits the course?

I understand how to build a 1 question quiz that stops the learner from progressing, but is there a way to make the course exit and report a fail if they get it wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there Elliot. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Are you including the feedback layers for your questions? If so, you could base the completion off the quiz for slides viewed and force the course to exit when the user has failed a question.

For example, say one of your users makes it to the first question in your course. If they pass the course, they'll receive the correct answer feedback prompt and they'll be able to continue. If they fail, they would be prompted with an incorrect answer prompt. Now, here's where you can set up the course to exit.

On the "Incorrect" feedback layer, you should have a "Continue" button by default. I would change that to say "Finish", or something similar. Remove the other triggers for this button and add a new button that uses the "Exit Course" trigger when the user clicks.

Not sure if this will work for you, but it might be something worth trying.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi Christine,

Sorry that my reply is so late, but I was just digging through emails and found your reply.

I just wanted to write back and say that I did build a solution to this, albeit in a slightly hap-hazard way.

Since the course is going to an LMS that can only receive 'Completed/Incomplete' statuses, your method would work, but the nature of the navigation would allow users to simply enter the course again (as it was only incomplete, not failed), skip backwards and go elsewhere in the course.

The way I ended up getting around this was to take the user to a page with no navigation, that notifies them that they have failed and automatically sends a message to their manager notifying them that the learner has failed. That way, if even if they exit and re-launch the course, they cannot move off that page, and their manager will already know that they have failed.

I thought I would take the time to write back in case anyone else comes up against a problem similar to this, and I also wanted to show my appreciation for your assistance. I'm very grateful of the community and support your offer for this product.

Kind Regards.

Elliot.
