I'm responsible for curating the Storyline template used by my team. I've had to make a few changes to it recently, and I saved a new version of the .storytemplate file.
But the file size has gone from 9MB to 18MB. I can't understand why it's done this - I've actually removed some master layouts, so it's actually smaller than it used to be.
How can I reduce the file size of the template? The demand on RAM is causing our computers to crash.
I'v been given 1 Gigabyte templates(a lot of massive videos inside) and they were still somewhat decent to work with(took some time loading them in). 18MB shouldn't be crashing your PC, that's pretty strange.
Video's/audio are the main increase in size i'd say, as Images don't tend to be that big.
When you are making changes to the template, are you working on your local C: drive or a network? As described here, working on a network drive or an external (USB) drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, and that could be contributing to the unexplained increase in file size.
If issues persist, you may also want to try importing the file into a new file, or running this repair Storyline.
It's saved on Dropbox to share with staff who work remotely. Dropbox downloads it onto your C: drive before you start working on it, so would that cause the same issue?
When you say 'importing into a new file', what do you mean? The thing is (and this could be part of the problem) every time I make a template update, I have to import it into a new file. That's the only way (I know of) to access and make changes to template slides.
Hi, Miriam -- Thanks so much for your response, and I just want to clarify regarding working on files from Dropbox, if I could. I just want to make sure when you are pulling files from Dropbox (considered a network drive), you are downloading and saving the file to your C drive, then making the changes you need. After you are finished, move it back to Dropbox, and save a back up on your C: drive. My thinking was that could be contributing to the increase in file size you are seeing. If issues persist, you are welcome to reach out to our Support Engineers for further assistance using this form, as they may have some additional ideas or suggestions for you to try. :)
If I notice a project sizing growing too much, I do a "save as" to a new file name and that usually shrinks it, With some files I've had to do this multiple times to "clean up" the file. Be aware that I believe your course id value may change when you change the file name.
Thanks Matthew - I've told my team we're going to need to change our process for saving and working with Story files. Hopefully this reduces our problems - so far I've noticed a difference in the size of some files but not the template itself.
Will keep y'all posted if I continue to have issues!
