I'm trying to get the "nextcha" layer to accept answer of the number "1" or the spelling "one". I've added the "or" condition but it always registers as an incorrect answer. Any help is appreciated!
Change the trigger on the text entry box, so that the PreRoll8 variable is populated with the entered text (in your file it's PreRoll1). PreRoll8 is the variable that you reference in your triggers on the NEXTCHA button.

Here is the file with the trigger changed... you need to change trigger from Preroll8 to PreRoll1. I added a Next Slide so you can see it work.
