Hiding Layer hides other layer

Jul 10, 2019

I have a layer that I'd like to keep on top.

When another layer has a button that hides "this" layer, it hides the layer on top also.

Is that the expected behavior?

Hi Sam,

I'm not sure if "Showing" layers in Storyline is supposed to work the same as components in an individual layer. In other words, the higher up the list, the closer to the foreground the item is displayed. I suspect, that layers are placed on top of each other in the order they are called up, irrespective of their position in the layers list, however I cannot speak with authority on that issue.

To get round your problem (as you may have already figured out) all you need to do is to set up a second trigger to show the Permanent layer after you show the Temporary layer when the button is clicked.

In short, therefore, I suspect this is expected behaviour and not a bug.

Sam,

When another layer has a button that hides "this" layer, it hides the layer on top also.

Only two things hide a layer: 1. a trigger to hide a specific layer (like "hide this layer"), but that only ever hides one layer

2. opening a layer that is set to "Hide other layers", which hides all showing layers.

If you have a "permanent" layer, and show another layer, normal default activity is that the second layer will hide the "permanent" layer. Then when you hide the second layer, the permanent layer is already hidden. All layers default to "Hide other layers", so if you want to keep "permanent" showing, you need to deselect "Hide other layers" on every layer that might be shown while "permanent" is showing.

As Ned said, the most recently opened layer is always the topmost layer.

If you set "permanent" and "second" not to "hide other layers", you can show "permanent", then show "second". ("Second" will be on top and "Permanent" will show through places where "second" does not cover it.) If you hide "second", you will see "permanent", or if you show "permanent" again, it will be moved to the top, with "second" showing through places in "permanent" that aren't covered by something.
