Hot key works only once

Aug 13, 2015

I have several hotspots that work fine with a mouse. However, I also need to provide keyboard alternatives for the same function if the user doesn't have/can't use a mouse (universal access challenge, in other words).

For this example, lets use the hotspot I've created for the custom glossary I built. It is in the lower left corner of the attached file, the one that looks like an open book to anyone who tests my file. (Sorry, the file had to be sanitized for customer privacy reasons, so it looks REALLY bland! LOL) The user selects it, the glossary opens in a lightbox, no problem. Close the lightbox, the narration continues where it left off, and if you need to open the glossary again, the hotspot works the same way, no problem.

But the keyboard alternative isn't working the same way. I created a trigger for "user presses a key" and in this case chose to use the letter "G" as the keyboard option. When you preview or publish the file, the letter G works great to open the glossary--the first time. That's where the problems start.

  • If you close the lightbox and continue, the keyboard key no longer works. You cannot select it a second time.
  • If you select the hotspot first, then the keyboard key never works.

As a workaround I considered using a variable but there is no option to adjust a variable based on the action of closing the lightbox. I need to come up with a solution because I need to repeat it for several of the other hotspots you see in the design.

So, anyone have any ideas? And thanks in advance for any suggestions!

At least part of this is a known issue where the slide loses focus after the first keep press and you need to click on the slide to gain focus and then your key presses should work again.

I have not found any work around apart from forcing the user to click on the screen again, the developers are aware but worth reporting as an issue.
