Hotspots do not scroll in sync with scrolling panels.

Oct 04, 2023

Hello all,

I'm currently using Storyline 360 v3.79.30921.0, on a Windows 10 PC.

My problem involves slides containing images. These images contain scrolling panels, with hotspots placed inside these scrolling panels.

My expectation is that, once inserted into a scrolling panel, a hotspot will move in sync with that panel whenever the panel is scrolled (i.e. that the hotspot stays in the same actual position on its assigned part of the image placed inside the scrolling panel).

Sometimes the above happens, sometimes it doesn't. And there seems to be no way to force the hotspots to move in lockstep with the scrolling panel.

Browsing this forum, it seems that this has been an ongoing problem for five years or more. And the standard response to requests for help seems to be "Once inserted, the hotspot should scroll with the panel." With all due respect, I know perfectly well how the hotspot should behave. What I need is a definitive statement of "This is what's wrong - and this is how to fix it."

Addendum to my original post: It seems that scrolling panels within scrolling panels have the same problem. They don't move in lockstep with the original scrolling panel, either.

I'm seriously hoping someone can help me find a reliable fix for this problem. The people dependent on me for E-learning material are asking questions, and I'm running out of excuses.

Hi Nicholas!

It sounds like your hotspots added to slides with scrolling panels are behaving erratically. Sorry to hear that, but I'd be happy to assist!

Since the behavior observed is intermittent, can you please confirm if you are working on your local hard drive? Working on a network or shared drive may cause erratic behavior. Also, you mentioned using Storyline 360 version 3.79. Does upgrading your Storyline application to our current version (Build 3.80.31058.0) produce the same issue?

To your follow-up statement, scrolling panels do support a wide variety of elements with the exception of other scrolling panels.

If you're willing to share a copy of your project file here in the discussion or privately through a support case, I'd be happy to take a closer look and test the behavior on our end. We'll delete it from our system as soon as we're finished!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Steven,

Apologies for the late reply; I'm in the UTC+2 time zone.

To answer your questions and suggestions:

  • Yes, I'm working locally. Storyline 360 is installed on C:\, all image resources being used are on C:\ and all *.STORY files are being saved to C:\.
  • After reading your suggestion, I did the upgrade, and am currently running Storyline 360 v3.80.31058.0. The upgrade made no difference to the behaviour of hotspots in scrolling panels.
  • The UI I'm working on is proprietary, so I'll send the project file through a support case. I'll mark it for your attention.
  • The fact that scrolling panels can't support 'subordinate' scrolling panels within Storyline 360 is of concern to me. Scrolling panels within other scrolling panels is a pretty common feature in modern user interfaces - surely this should be the subject of attention on the part of the dev team? If not, it should definitely be the subject of a feature request.

PROBLEM SOLVED (Big thanks to Luiza Quinto of Articulate Support).

If anyone reading this has trouble getting a hotspot to integrate into a scrolling panel, the fix is as follows:

  1. Adjust the Timeline view (bottom of the screen) so that the listing for the scrolling panel can be seen.
  2. Click the hotspot to select it.
  3. Drag the hotspot around the approximate centre of the scrolling panel a few times (you may see a number of pink orientation lines appear and disappear), then drop the hotspot anywhere within the scrolling panel.
  4. The hotspot should now be listed in the Timeline view as a 'subordinate' object to the scrolling panel.
  5. Scroll the scrolling panel. The hotspot should now move in lockstep with the panel.
