Hover state not working on one object

Mar 26, 2014

I am having trouble with one of my slides -- I have two photos on it, to which I have added the same built in hover state. The border on these photos should be changing color when hovered. I created the states the same exact way, but one works and the other doesn't!

When I am in the states tab, they both change color when hovered. When I am in preview mode, only one changes color! The mouse does change to a hand when hovering on either (there is an interaction when you click).

There are no object over the photos.

I tried deleting the state and recreating it, with no result.

I also tried creating a trigger to change the hover state of the one having problems but it still isn't working.

Help!!!

Thanks!

Hi Darcy,

Sorry to hear about your odd hover state. First I'd want to check that you're following along with the guidelines here to work on local project files as working off a network or shared drive could cause unusual or erratic behavior.  If the behavior continues you may also want to try importing it into a new project file to see if it resolves any lingering issues.

After you've checked into the above and the behavior continues can you share your Storyline project with us here so that we can take a look?

Hi Ashley! Thanks for your help!

My project is local. Importing the project to a new file didn't work :(

For some reason i can't attach my project here! It says that "the file or source can't be found". I tried different browsers and creating zip files. Not sure what's up with that. One frustrating thing is that when it gives me this error message there's no way to get out of it and I just have to close the webpage. it makes me lose anything I have typed in here, which the first time was a lot. Thought you could pass that along to your website team.

So I tried reinserting the picture and tested it as I added all of the states, triggers, and properties back to it to see when it goes wrong. It turns out that it is the shadow added to the shape. As I said, there are two pictures with the same properties, triggers, etc. One is of a cat and one of a person. The cat is the one I have been having trouble with, but I discovered that the other picture has different problems.

CAT

Perspective Shadow : Hover and Visited states don't work at all, mouse changes to a hand when hovered though.

Outline Shadow: States work normally

No Shadow: States work normally

HUMAN

Perspective Shadow: States work normally, outline is complete

Outline Shadow: States work, Outline is cut off on the sides so that there is only an outline on the top and bottom of the picture

No Shadow: States work, Outline is cut off on the sides so that there is only an outline on the top and bottom of the picture

I want to keep the outline, which acts as a frame, but I can't seem to get the pictures to act the same way! Both pictures are the same kind of file, created in the same program.

Hi Darcy,

Thanks for updating us here - it sounds like something specific to these two images then, correct? What type of images are they (png, jpeg, etc.)? Also instead of copy/paste, can you try to import that one slide into a new file and see if that resolves the issues with the image? If you're unable to attach the file and would like us to take a look I can send you directions to share with me directly.

In regards to attaching your file, have you checked to see if you've recently updated your Flash player? You may need to update it specific to the browser to attach the file and you should see a small red X in the top right hand corner to close it.

Hi Ashley! I'm sorry I never saw your response!

Importing to a new project: Already tried that with no luck

File types: tried both .png and .jpg

My co-worker and I continue to have this issue on new projects as well. The one I am working on now is a jpg with a border. When I go into preview it, the sides disappear. There is no hover state and no shadow or effect.

I can send you files directly if you'd like!

Attaching the file: I tried Chrome on both windows and Mac and also explorer on Windows. All have updated flash. I get the same error no matter what articulate file I try to upload. I see the red box to close on the upload box, but the error box has no way to close it. Attaching picture, they upload fine, as well as audio...

Thanks for your help!

You were right! I took it down to one slide and it worked!

Okay, here is a simple example. The first one I was having issues with I just worked around, but I can always go back and recreate it if that helps.

So look at the layer titled "Hearing" - the picture has a border all the way around.

Then preview the slide and click on the arrow by the ear. When it goes to the layer, the side sections of the border disappears.

This is similar to what was happening with the initial course, but it was doing this based on the image effects I had, and each image behaved differently.

Hi Darcy,

Thanks for sending along the one file. I saw the behavior you were describing with the ear image. I tried to use that same image in a new file, and saw similar behavior. I tried with another jpg I had handy, and applied the picture border to it - and it looked as expected with all four sides of the border visible. I'm curious - could you send me the original jpg so that I can see how that behaves when I'm able to apply the border myself?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Thanks Darcy - that one worked fine for me in a new file. Iinserted the image again into your existing file, and applied the border ( Ithink maybe this is a bit larger than you had...but..) it worked as expected inpreview. I could see the entire border (all four sides). Can you check thisversion?

I believe we may have gone over these troubleshooting steps before, but with all your project files you'll want to adhere to these guidelines:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

Looks good, and this helped me figure out what's causing it. If you flip the picture horizontally like I had it (just looks more esthetically pleasing if it's facing inward) the borders disappear again. Should I just be editing images in another program before I bring them in? Strange behavior...

also notice that the borders never seem to perfectly encapsulate the images when I apply them. There's always at least a tiny gap where you can see the background, even if it doesn't pull this funkiness. Sometimes it's rather large though.

Thanks for all your help!

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Ah - thanks Darcy - I didn't notice it had been flipped! I've seen some other reports recently that we've shared with our QA team where applying image effects such as that have caused odd behavior - but I haven't seen this particular one. It looks like when you flip it horizontal it actually shifts a bit to the right, as you can see a sliver of the border on the left hand side. The one way around it would be to edit the image outside of Storyline - or instead of adding the border, add a shape behind the image that would appear as a border.

I'll also share this example with our QA team for further review.
