I am attempting to edit the navigation controls on the player, but I only want to change them on specific layers of my slide. I can only find how to change them for the whole slide rather than specific layers - can anybody help please?
Layers are only related to the content area, therefore, they do not contain their own Navigation controls. To accomplish layer based navigation, you can place buttons on your layers that show or hide that layers as well as ones that jump to other slides.
The problem I had is that I wanted to remove the submit button on the navigation controls, but I need it for the first couple of layers of the slide but not for the rest. Do you know if there is anyway of disabling the button on certain layers at all?
The only method you could do is to disable the Submit button for the slide and create your own submit buttons on the specific layers you want it enabled for.
Just saw this post and had a question along the same lines. Can the next/previous buttons be removed from a layer. I added a "close slide" button on each layer as I want users to go back to the base slide to access another related layer. However, the n/p buttons from the player show up and if clicked moves the user to the next slide.
Slide layers still contain the same functionality of working with the base layer next/previous buttons in Storyline 2. Within Storyline 2, you can choose to hide theplayer buttons and enable them with triggers which may fit for your needs of only showing them on a layer.
If there is another feature you'd like to see, please always feel free to share your thoughts in the form of a feature request with our product development team.
This is helpful, but I'm wondering if you have more detail on how to set it up. I followed the link but am still not getting it. I have a base layer with 5 buttons. Each button opens a layer. I want to make sure that each layer does not have the n/p buttons so the learner needs to use the close window trigger and return to the base layer. They then can use the next button on the base layer to move to the next slide. However, it is not mandatory to view all the layer first.
You won't be able to remove the n/p buttons from the layer itself, unless you remove them from the slide as a whole. It sounds like you may want to use the lightbox functionality (as a trigger) though so that it pops up as a new overlaying window and the user can close that to continue navigating?
I added a variable "continue" set to false. On opening the layer "continue" becomes true. I added "continue == true" as a condition to the next button.
This thread is a bit dated, but it looks like you may be chiming in to share some assistance, which is always welcome. It could certainly help others that run across this thread in the future.
I have a very similar question to Sophie about layers. I'm working in Storyline 3 and want to have the player's Previous and Next buttons for each layer act as triggers that show other layers for the same slide.
I'm hoping to do this while still keeping the Previous and Next buttons on the base layer as triggers that lead to the previous and next slides.
From the replies above, it sounded like this is not possible, but I noticed it has been a few years since then. Just wanted to check if anyone knows about a new feature or workaround to get this done.
We haven't changed how the Next/Previous buttons function, but that doesn't mean you can't set up something like this.
Often it comes down to what other objects or triggers you're using on your slide and layers, so if. you're able to share the .story file here with the E-Learning Heroes community folks can weigh in and offer ideas based on your set up.
Click here and you can use the Add Attachment button to upload a copy for the community to take a look at!
Thanks, Ashley! In this case, the file has proprietary info, so I won't be able to share it. I don't think it is anything too elaborate, though.
I'm trying to make the Previous/Next buttons on the player jump between layers on the same slide. For the Base layer of that slide, however, I want the Previous/Next buttons to lead to the previous and next slides. Would really appreciate knowing of any 'hacks' that folks have come up with for this.
Check out this quick sample file I put together for you. This slide has 3 layers, and the learner will access each layer by clicking the player next button. The trick is to use a variable counter to tell the next button which layer to access.
Have a look, and let me know if you have any questions about it!
Nice fix, Alyssa! I think I got it working. I've scrubbed the content so I can share what I built. I have also included Previous buttons that lead to the previous layer. Never knew variables were so powerful :)

Hi Sophie:
The only method you could do is to disable the Submit button for the slide and create your own submit buttons on the specific layers you want it enabled for.
The submit button will be in your content area.

Thanks Dennis, that's a really good suggestion.
Not sure why I didn't think of this solution myself!
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Ashley
That's what I suspected. Just set it up and it works well.
Thank you,
