How to create default settings for captions of screen recordings?

Feb 13, 2016

Hi there,

I would love to know if there is a way to set up default settings for the captions for screen recordings?

Looking at: https://community.articulate.com/articles/how-to-customize-your-screen-recording-captions-in-articulate-storyline, I see that I can set the theme colours and font that affect the captions.

However there doesn't seem to be a way to set:

- the shape

- the shadow

- the font size

I have tried "Set As Default Shape" as outlined here: https://community.articulate.com/series/4/articles/adding-captions, but that doesn't seem to work (I found posts suggesting that this is a long standing known bug).

Adjusting font size after capture often pushes the caption out of position.

Is there anyway to set up / style the captions prior to capture?

If not is there any to adjust all of the captions other than having to manually adjust each one in turn.

I would love to know any ideas or techniques that anyone has to achieve customised captions for their projects.

Many thanks

Patrick

Thanks for the reply Nancy,

I agree with you that it would be a nice feature but when you say there is no way to change the default settings: surely that was the purpose of the "Set As Default Shape" option when you right click on a shape?

Posts on the Storyline forums suggest that this is a bug (both in Storyline 1 and 2?).

I will submit a feature request / request for to be fixed.

It seems to be an area where Storyline 2 is behind Captivate as Captivate allows you to predefine and set default captions. It also allows you to make global changes to objects in a couple of different ways:

Apply To All Items - To apply the effect to all objects that belong to the object type.

Apply To All Items Of Same Style - To apply to all objects that use the same object style.

I will submit this too.

Thanks again for your response

Hello Nazeeruddin and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Thanks for contacting us and sharing that you are looking for a similar solution.

You can change the default color and font style of your captions. Check out this guide on how to customize your screen recording captions

If you'd like to make further customizations, you can format the first caption manually, then use format painter to apply the customization to the rest of the captions.

Hi Leslie,

I thank you for your response on my request.

Yes I agree with you, currently i am using the same tip for formatting the captions. and the Highlighter rectangular box.

It would be very helpfull and time saving for our projects if we would be having these in a theme before starting the recording.

Thanks for sharing your additional thoughts and feature idea, Nazeeruddin.

We do have an open feature request for the ability to:

Set default hint caption style for screen recordings

I've added this conversation to the report. I also wanted to share some information about how we manage these feature requests as that may be helpful.
