I am trying to figure out how to insert slide number in Storyline. It seems that we have to use some manual variable and trigger to make this happen. The downside with this is that our training is not linear. The reason behind the slide number to be "static" instead of "dynamic" is that we can have a better QA process. Is there any idea how to achieve this? Thanks in advance.
Mostly we sent out the training to our SMEs for review. The SMEs will review the look and feel, the contents, navigation and etc. Publishing to word will not accomplish this purpose.
Yeah... we are a little bit reluctant. We always got a comment like "It does not look the same when I review it, what do you change?". These are type of things that we want to avoid.
Storyline must have some sort of native variables that we can use. It can not be that for simple thing like slide number, we have to use variables and a whole bunch of triggers to get it work.
You could manually add the slide numbers to each slide and then remove them. I guess I still don't quite understand why you need them. If you are viewing slides in a non-linear order, what does seeing a slide number give the viewer? If they publish the presentation to Word, you have the slides in the order that they exist anyway so if you are simply making sure someone views all of the slides they could figure it out with the Word document.
I too would like to publish slide numbers on each screen in the upper right corner for SME review. I don't want to show the menu on the side. I don't care if they are out of order. I want to tell my reviewers that if they have specific feedback about a screen to indicate the number in the top right corner. I am trying to keep it as simple as possible. Is there any way to show this through a standard variable? Thanks!
I also need this functionality, but for compliance reasons. All of our final versions of training must contain certain info on every page or screen, including "Screen x of xx." I agree that it doesn't always make sense in e-learning, and have pointed that out many times. Certainly our regs could use re-interpreting in the case of online presentation. However, we don't really have a choice at this point. When I use Articulate, I can accommodate this requirement. But it sounds like you're telling me my only option in Storyline is to manually number each screen?
I cant believe how many times this issue comes up in the SL forums. It always seems to go something like this:
SL User : I need this functionality for a. compliance, b. tracking, c. because my course IS linear, d. etc etc. SL Staff Member: E-LEARNING HAS CHANGED!!! WOOT!!! IT'S A NON LINEAR PARADIGM SHIFT!!! Go educate the CEO, standards body, government agency that they are living in the past!
SL User : Uh, no. Thats not going to happen. I have legitimate reasons for this functionality. Why doesn't SL provide it?
SL Staff Member: ... you can hard code the numbers if you need them I guess ...
Thanks for the feedback. If there are ways you'd like to see page numbering become improved, please feel free to share your ideas directly with our development team via the feature request link here. They see every one that comes through, and we're all grateful for your input. Thanks!
Here's a thread that should help you add slide numbers to your presentation. If this is something you would like to see as a feature in Storyline, you can submit a feature request here.
So I assume nothing has been done about this since January, I find it hard to believe that a product like SL that makes its hay on importing Powerpoint slide content, does not import the slide number with the rest of the slide content. It boggles my mind. Is there any update on the "slide number" mele?

Hi Mark,
Still no new updates, but feel free to share your voice with the dev team.
This should be a simple thing to do, and would be very useful for QA & course testing. We don't want to print out slide lists, because this isn't sufficient for testing branching. We want our QA to go through the course. When errors are found, they can click a test button that displays the current slide number, and then log a bug report. Seems like this should be a fairly easy bit of information for Storyline to make available via internal variables.
Are there any internal variableat that are accessible to course developers?
The internal variables (such as the results.scorepoints for a quiz or the slide numbers that appear in the menu) are not accessible elements within Storyline, although other users have submitted feature requests to be able to access them or to have the ability to add slide numbers to a course. You could turn on the menu for the purposes of testing which would let the user know what slide they were on and share that information in an email back with the course developers.

Hi Benny.
What particularly are you trying to QA? Some folks simply publish to Word to QA the content.

Any suggestion to insert slide number?
Hi Benny,
Have you considered showing the menu with automatic numbering in it?
This function is quite easy te enable/disable and doesn't ask you to create a new way to number your slide.
Have a nice day!
Annie
Hi Annie,
We did thought about that option. But this does not work well if we have branching and we don't want user to click on the menu and got frustrated.

Could you enable it only for the review by the SME and then disable the menu when publishing for the learner...?

Yes, I'd like this feature also. p# of pp## kind of thing would be very useful for learners on a linear eLearning course.
Peter, is there any news when the next version of Storyline may be released?
Thanks.
Hi Stanton! No news on a new version. You can continue updating your current version for free, though. Update 3 was released on May 21st 2013.
To find your current version information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline".
If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:

Anything new yet on the issue of numbering slides?
I am hoping the SDK will allow me to build a custom frame to do this
Hi Ed! Did you check out this thread? I have no update to provide.
Good luck Randall
