Hello- I found Jeanette's tutorial on how to show the panel, but I'm unable to make it work in my project! When I move my cursor to the right side and hover until I see the black crossed lines...holding and dragging doesn't open the panel as it should. What else can I try?
You have to drag the black crossed lines pretty far. The panel doesn't slide open. It snaps open if you drag far enough. At least that is what it does on mine.
Ah! That's it! I was expecting the grey bar to drag out with the crossed black lines and kept stopping when it didn't. Thank you both for the quick help and great explanations. Much appreciated!

As Meryem mentioned you have to drag it fairly far out as you'll see in this video below:
You'll see the grey line move and that line delineates where the trigger panel would go out to.
