It sounds like the trigger and layer windows have been minimized.
If you hover the mouse over to the far right side of the Storyline window (where the trigger/layer windows usually are) until you see a double arrow icon like this.....
Click and drag to the left until you see a gray line appear like this...
Let go of the mouse and the windows should reappear like so....
