Result slides do not appear in player menu

May 01, 2013

Is there a way to make a result slide appear in the player menu?  Is there a reason why a result slide does not appear in the menu?  I have the slide selected in the menu section of the player interface, but it does not show up when published.

Hi there Paul!

Correct, this is actually by design. By default, Storyline will not display result slides in the menu when previewing or publishing.

If you want a result slide to display in your menu outline, do the following:

  1. Create a new scene in Storyline.
  2. Move the result slide to the new scene.  It needs to be the only slide in the scene.
  3. Adjust the triggers on the feedback layers for the last question in your quiz, so they jump to the result slide in the new scene.

I hope this helps!

Hi ! Thanks for that but it doesn't solve the problem for me.

I have 3 result slide in 3 different scenes + 1 result slide in the final scene that collects the results from the other 3 results slides.

I thought there was a part missing in the tutorial (How does fixing the trigger links to the result slide would make it visible in the menu ?) but I hoped for the best and took the time to rearrange my whole project as indicated.

The new items do show up in the menu (the 4 new scenes I created for each result slide). I then rearranged the entries for the 4 new scenes in the menu tab of the player (that's the part missing in your tutorial in my opinion).

Still they are not clickable. Did I miss something ? Is it because I made the menu collapsable ?

Would it be possible to submit this as a feature for your developpers : modify the player options to leave it optional to have the result slides visible or hidden in the menu ? I don't even get what's the idea behind hiding them by default...

Hi Fabrice,

The method Christine shared is to have the results slides visible in the player menu, but you'd still need to navigate through the quiz to access the Results slide as visiting the results slide prior to answering all the questions may make the score set to a lower number which would be reported to your LMS. If you'd like to see an option to include the Results slides in the menu and allow users to access them you can share your thoughts with our development team in the form of a feature request here.

Do you mean that results get sent to the LMS when the result slide is displayed ? I thought it was on exiting the module.

I added a shortcut to my final result slide in the topbar  of the player. Does it mean that if I open this result slide before answering all questions, the result that is sent to the LMS is the first one ?

What about I answer a few questions, go to the result slide to check my score (let's say 30%), then answer some more questions and eventually get a 70% score. What is the score that is sent to the LMS ? Is the score sent to the LMS by the "submit results" trigger on the result slide ?

Hi Fabrice,

Articulate Storyline communicates course completion to a learning management system (LMS) as soon as the learner meets the completion requirement—i.e., either when they reach the designated quiz result slide or when they've viewed the required number of slides.

If you revisit the results slide - and your score has changed, that should be updated, but there are some LMSs that will consider the course to be in review mode upon meeting the completion requirement. This article may assist you if you're looking to modify that behavior or prevent the learners from inadvertently entering "review" mode.

Thanks for this, this is very good to know.

However, I still can't seem to find the solution to my problem.

My project has 4 result slides. The final result slide combines the points for all others and is used for tracking. As you see in the screencap below, this user has 110 points and the passing score is 91. Yet, the sidebar of the LMS (CHAMILO) indicates that this module isn't completed or passed (the tick next to the name of the module lights up green when it's the case).

I know that the problem doesn't come from the LMS because I've managed to validate the completion (tick goes green) by setting the passing score very low (10% I think).

I've tried almost all combinations for Complete/incomplete/passed/failed settings.

I've also tried to set the completion to number of slides seen. It works fine when I tune it to 1 or 2 slides but not that well if I set it to 50 out of 57. The question is : does the validation for one slide seen comes when the timeline starts or ends ?

Do you have any clue as to why the completion doesn't work as expected with my final result slide ?

Do you know of any extensive article on these issues (reporting) ? Especially the "Complete/incomplete/passed/failed settings" that I still don't fully understand. I'm sure it depends on the LMS but your developers must have ad an idea about why they were offering those settings.

Hi Fabrice,

There is a great article here on reporting/tracking issues within your LMS and a great testing method would be to see how completion occurs in SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard testing method for SCORM content.

Also, you've seen that you have four reporting options from which to choose when publishing for LMS:

  • Passed/Incomplete
  • Passed/Failed
  • Completed/Incomplete
  • Completed/Failed

Many LMSs track both a completion status and a success status. To report both statuses, choose either Passed/Incomplete or Passed/Failed when publishing Storyline content. Completed/Incomplete and Completed/Failed report only the completion status.

The slides are considered visited when the timeline starts on each slide.

I am having the same issue. I have a review slide and a slide after that at the end of my module. I have given the review slide its separate scene and also the goodbye slide its separate scene. I have linked all the navigation. Then I have gone into the player and manually added the two slides to the menu. While they show up in the menu, they do not show up in the review pane to the right.

Hi Lamma,

By default, Articulate Storyline doesn't show result slides in the menu when previewing or publishing. If you want to display a result slide in your course menu, do the following:

  1. Create a new scene in Storyline and give it a meaningful name.
  2. Move the result slide to the new scene. It needs to be the only slide in the scene.
  3. Adjust the triggers on the feedback layers for the last slide in your quiz, so they jump to the result slide in the new scene.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "review" pane on the right? Is that something in your LMS or possibly I'm not sure of the terminology you're using related to a Storyline element?

Hi, all. I came across this results-don't-show-in-menu issue this morning. I didn't like putting the results in separate scenes, and that still didn't let users click in the Menu to return to the results. So here's what I did instead: I inserted a slide called "Test Results" right before the actual results slide. I set that slide to automatically advance after a very brief time. It has the same heading as the actual Test Results slide, so when the two slides play, it just seems like the results are loading. Being a normal slide, the bogusly named "Test Results" does show up in the Menu.

Caveat: The main drawback occurs if the user clicks Previous on the actual results slide, because it will go back to the fake one and then auto advance again. But they can still use the Menu to get where they want to go, so I'm accepting that quirk.
