How to stop auto advancing slides in Storyline after import from PowerPoint

How to stop auto-advancing slides in Storyline after you have imported your slides from PowerPoint?

I've imported slides from PowerPoint, and they seem to have made all the slide auto-advance (forward). I want to turn this feature off. Can someone help me with this situation? I've seen similar threads to this question, but none provide me with an answer. I know how to change the advancement on layers but what about the slides themselves?

Thank you in advance!

Hi Maree!

By default, when you import your slides from PowerPoint, all slides have the Slide Property of Slide Advances: Automatically. See this article: https://community.articulate.com/series/74/articles/articulate-storyline-360-user-guide-how-to-adjust-slide-properties#advance

You can easily change all of your slide to Slide Advances: By User from Story View. In Story View use the keyboard shortcut CONTROL + A (and CONTROL + A a second time if you have multiple scenes). This will select all of the slides in your entire project! Then, make that adjustment there in the Slide Properties area to BY USER and it will change all of the slides that are selected!

(One thing to note, if you have a question bank draw selected, you won't be able to access the Slide Properties. You can de-select the Question Bank Draw(s) and you'll be good to go!)

I hope that helps!

Hi, Andrea.

Thank you for reaching out!

Can you confirm that in Story View, if you select all your slides, this is what you see in the Slide Properties?

If your properties are the same as the screenshot above, I'd like to look at your project to see what's going on. Would you be comfortable sharing your .story file either publicly here or privately through a support case?

Hi, Shauna, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨

Thank you for reaching out!

Let's try to narrow down the issue:

  • Is this happening with one specific .story file or every file in Storyline 360?
  • Are you working from a local hard drive? We don't recommend working with files on a network drive.
  • Have you attempted to repair Storyline 360? Here are the instructions.

If a repair doesn't solve the issue, would you be able to share your .story file either publicly here or privately through a support case so we can see what's going on?

Thank you for the quick response! I don't believe any of those are the underlying issue:

• Yes, seems to be happening with multiple .story files for multiple users
• I believe I am working from a local hard drive. I uploaded the PowerPoint from my personal H drive
• We shouldn’t need to repair Storyline as it was just re-installed by our IT department today

I have shared the .story file for you to look at.

Hi, Shauna.

Thank you for sharing the .story file and the additional details!

I was not able to replicate the issue on my end, as I could click the drop-down menu and change Slide Advances to By user on your file:

It couldn't tell from your screenshot what happens when you try to click the drop-down menu. Does it open but with a disabled option? Or are you not able to click the arrow?

I could change it manually for each slide to complete the assignment. And now, when I tried to verify if the issue still persists (to change for the set of slides) looks like it is working as expected. I do see the drop-down option "By user" now.

But I didn't change anything with the deck or the software. Closed after exporting the file on that day and opened again today. Strange.

Hi team,

i am experiencing the same issue. I have imported slides from PowerPoint into Storyline 360, and I have manually changed the Slide Advances setting from "Automatically" to "By User", using multiple methods (i.e. on each slide individually, selecting all, in the story view and in scene view).

I have also saved the project, closed and reopened Storyline and every time the setting is reverting to Slide Advancement Automatically.

Is this a new issue?

Many thanks.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Narelle! Sorry for this trouble; happy to help!

Any chance you could share your file with us to see what you have going on in your project and offer suggestions? You can share it in this discussion or privately here.

Staying tuned for your response so we can keep at this!

Hi, Samantha.

Thank you for reaching out!

Can you clarify what you mean by "a custom player in the software"? Are you asking about importing or opening a custom layer in Storyline?

You should still have the same options to change the slide advancing settings in Story View:

If this is not your scenario, I'm happy to continue troubleshooting!
