Hyperlink is not workable after Publish Storyline file

Jan 22, 2014

Hi all,

Has anyone encountered this issue, will you pls advise how to resolve it?

Issue: The hyperlink is not workable in published storyline file (Publish to LMS), but the original URL in storyline file is correct.

Thank you,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer:

Is this one of many hyperlinks where this one does not work, but others do?

Is this hyperlink directing the user to a HTTPS site?

Is the hyperlink pointing to a site that is your LMS platform does not consider safe?

Have you tested your course on an external server (such as a basic web server or SCORM Cloud)?

If you can go to the link from your computer, but not the LMS, chances are the link is being blocked either by your LMS server or by you Organizations network.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for your reply.

1. Only 1 hyperlink in our course, it is not workable in published file.

2. It will direct the user to a HTTP site

3. Actually, the link is workable if we publish file on local machine directly and then click this link, but when we move the published files to our internal LAN networking disk, and then copy to local machine, it will not work.

4. We don't test our course on an external server, based on your description, does it mean it is not a real problem, I mean after we upload the course to website, it will be workable automatically as long as original URL is set correctly, right?

Thank you,

Hi Jennifer:

My responses...

1. Is the published file tested in Flash / HTML5, or both outputs? If you test both, you may see a difference.

I would recommend you, or you have a programmer, look at the project while inspecting the link with trace tools (such as FireBug (for FireFox). I would trace the link in the working condition, then trace the link in the non-working condition. FireBug Developer tools can tell you a programmer (or web developer) what is going wrong.

2. HTTP is a best case and should work. Does the URL you are going to have any specifics that could block it? Example, when you click the link in the non-working condition, does something display (even a blank page)?

If yes, this may be a content blocking setup that can be fixed by your IT department.

3. The fact that it works on your local machine tells me you have the rights to do this locally, but on your network, and the LMS, you are being blocked. Your URL must be correct if it works in one place, but not another.

My experience tells me there is a security issue at large here.

I recommend having a programmer or web developer trace the issue with FireFox in both the working and non-working scenarios. As long as the person has access, they should be able to describe the cause in a few short minutes.

Good Luck,

Dennis Hall
