If you're mad about variables, please read this!

Dear Wonderful People,

I am trying to create a form that helps users to narrow down which adoption program is right for them. My slides ask a series of questions. As users work through the questions, variable values change which, in some cases, determine where the user is sent next.

Right now, I'm just working *on the first scene only* and trying to get the variable values to do what they're supposed to.  I have managed for some, but there are some problems I'm just not sure what to do with. These are:

a) When branched from the "single" page, "Number of people in Household" includes something that says, "%_player.#ofPeople". How do I get rid of that?

b)$_value_of_Posessions isn't equalling the typed value

c) Networth is supposed to set itself equal to $_value_of_Posessions but that isn't happening (since $_Value_of_Posessions isn't working)

d) I can't seem to preview it because the program starts churning freezing up.

I'm sure "D" has something to do with how many variables I have in there.

Please ignore cosmetic mistakes (spelling, etc.). I'm just not working on those right now.

At the risk of publicly displaying what a Storyline artist I'm not, I'm looking for

a) Answers to my questions

b) Suggestions for how to simplify this.

Finally, I have added a variable reference guide. You may not need it. This is just for due measure.

Thank you!

Liz

Hi Liz,

Well, you seem to have several things going on with this.

  1. You have some corruption in in your project. I think the corruption was caused by your variable names.
  2. You have some strange variable names. Be careful not to start a variable name with a special character like a # or a $. Those characters have special meanings internally to Storyline.
  3. I Couldn't get your original project to run, but I was able to import your slides into a new project. You may have re-connect some triggers.

I hope that helps you get going again.

Thanks, Dave!

I thought the characters in the variable names might have been messing
things up. I fixed those hoping it would fix the overall problem. It
seems to have helped but, yes, the program continues to lock up. I will
try to export my slides to a new project and see if that works. Thank you!
Liz
