Image quality when pasting Powerpoint drawing into Storyline 3

Aug 31, 2022

Hi, I've read lots of guidance on image quality and have a good handle on the issues around scaling, but I'd appreciate help on this topic. I am bringing in line drawings from PPT and wonder what's the best way to do that to get best image quality? Copy and paste? Import slide and crop? Print PPT screen and paste and crop? Thanks!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reaching out!

Storyline 3 already has a built-in feature for importing PowerPoint content into your project, so I recommend using this for bringing your content in from PowerPoint.

You can check also out this article on how to maintain the quality of your images and videos after you've imported them from PowerPoint.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for that suggestion, those links were helpful.

I’d welcome help with two problems when importing drawings from Powerpoint to Storyline 3. By way of background, this is an engineering training course with lots of circuit diagrams and drawing elements. This training will be used mainly in desktop environment, never in a smart phone.

The first problem is that the imported drawings have many element misalignments and re-sizings that take lots of time to fix. My drawings typically have nested groups, so I’ve tried fully ungrouping and then grouping (or leaving ungrouped), and I still have this issue. I’ve found it's much less time consuming to copy the drawing in PPT and paste it into a SL slide. I know this makes updating more time consuming, as I’ll need to make the updates in PPT and repeat the copy and paste. I'm disappointed in the PPT import features. Suggestions welcome!

The second problem is that the imported drawings are slightly fuzzy. I took a couple of steps to make them sharper. I’ll increase my 16:9 slide size from the default 960x540 to 1,100x619 or 1280x720.  Also, if any scaling is needed, I do the scaling in PPT so that I don’t need to scale it in SL. But there’s still some loss of crispness in the drawings.

And I have a somewhat related question. There's the Player choice to expand the slide to fit the browser or display at optimum size. Is it possible to leave that choice to the learner? For example, if they have a huge, high-res monitor it would be annoying to have the content scrunched into a fraction of the screen area.

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the great tip, Jürgen. I tried it and the images are super clear, just like in PPT slides. However, only some content appears in the media folder. For example, all photo-type images and quickart images appear in these folders, but my circuit diagrams and other PPT drawings do not. Is there a trick to including them?

Thanks - Paul

Jürgen, I found a way to include the drawings when using the ppt-->zip approach. I copy the drawing from PPT and paste into Paint, then copy the image from Paint and paste it into a new slide in PPT. Then change the PPT extension to zip and open that file. Now that image appears in the media folder. This results in a slightly crisper image than copying and pasting directly from PPT into SL slide. Quite labor intensive though! - Paul
