I created a scene in one project that I now want to move into a new, separate project. From the new project, I click import, and select the slides I want. But in the Import window and in the resulting new project, the slides' dimensions have changed so they're vertically stretched out. This hasn't happened to me before when I've imported slides from one story to the next. Where can I control the size?
You'll want to check into the Story size, and you can also determine what happens when you insert something of a different size as shown in this window:
I've found that copying and pasting slides into your desired doc size is sometimes more effective when switching between 4:3 and 16:9. It doesn't stretch or squish the images.
Create a blank new SL file and copy and paste from the other org SL file.
I would choose Crop using the settings Ashley Story showed above.

When I do this, I Save the original file with a new name (what the second project will be named), delete from it the slides I don't want.
Hi Lisa! Looks like you are getting some great assistance here :)
