Import Storyline project into another

Aug 30, 2012

Hello!  I just started using Storyline this week.  My first project is a software simulation.  I created a simulation in one SL project and would like to import it into another SL project.  I've watched/read the tutorials and it seems to be a very straightfoward process.  However, when I do it, I get a blank scene after the import.  None of my slides show up but a new scene is created with whatever I name it.

My process: New slide/Import/Storyline/select my .story file/Open/Select all slides/Import - I'm inserting into a new scene.

Am I missing something?

Thank you!

None of the workarounds fit my situation either. Like other users I have multiple inputs that need to go into one course.

For the slides with separate audio I tried exporting the audio, deleting the audio, then importing into the merged file. No luck. Any other suggestions?

Not that this worked anyway, but any suggestion for demos where the audio is not separate?

Any update on the next update? This is a serious bug!

I did figure out a VERY long and VERY convoluted way around this issue. The final output is not perfect, but is at least workable.  Essentially you copy or import all the components individually into the merged file. The document is attached in case you want to try it. Be warned, it is not a streamlined process!

I wonder if there is a way to convert the other Storyline projects into a video format and import that video into the main Storyline project?  Here's my situation:  The course I'm building, we'll call the Main Storyline Project (MSP), should include a series of six modules.  Each module was created in a separate Storyline project file b/c Storyline was crashing so often when I'd go in to edit the video captures.

Is it possible to publish these modules as a video file (including all the video captures, audio, objects and timings) and import that video into a single slide in the MSP?  From there, I could publish the MSP which will include the player with table of contents, etc.

I've tried publishing the individual modules for the web with a bare player (can't seem to get rid of the player completely) and importing the flash directly into the MSP.  Unfortunately, nothing is showing up.  Am I missing something?  Is there a better work-around?

I really can't afford the hours it will take to copy and paste each element into the MSP including exported video clips and audio, and re synch it all...

Thank you!

Hey Joe, welcome to Heroes!

Just wanted to apologize for any inconvenience the import issue has caused you and your team to this point. I'm not able to give you an exact ETA, but the issue will be fixed in our next update and we're getting really close to being able to share it with you. I'll update this thread as soon as it's available, and you can also stay up to speed with everything Articulate by subscribing to our Word of Mouth blog

Thanks, Peter.

In the end, I created separate files for each of the simulations/videos and then joined them via the "Jump to URL/File" trigger. It's not ideal, but it should do the trick this time.

Hi Luise!

You can do that a few ways How about using a Jump to: file/url trigger, and having your other published course open in a new window? Or you could bring it in as a web object as long you've uploaded the second project to its own web server...

Or did you have something else in mind that we might be able to help with?

Hi there,

So I waited with baited breath for the new update to Storyline to import multiple simulations into my main story. The update was loaded to my computer last night. I reactivated my account and did the import. However, it does not carry over the screens as I expected. The screens are off center to the left and the captions that I modified in the orginal story point to the margin in some slides. While I can manipulate the captions I cannot center the slide.

I have waited 2 weeks for the update and my project is overdue. I cannot re-record the simulations as the database that I was using was refreshed and I don't have time to recreate the data.

My solution: Since I imported the step-by-step story, it now is accessible from the Insert->Record Screen Dropdown. I selected it and inserted it into a new scene and the insert centered the simulation. I am now copying and pasting the updated captions from the imported file. Not clean but at least it will work.

Going forward I will record all simulations in the same story until the Articulate team comes up with something that works flawlessly.

Hi Kim

Reading your post, it almost seems as if there is a discrepancy between your 2 files (re project) sizes - one you originally recorded onto and the new target. Importing a storyline project file into another has never caused the issue you seemed to have faced. I do a lot of project importation and if I find a more expedient way to 'match captions' like what you have done, I'll be sure to post.

HI Michael,

Thanks for replying. There was a known issue when trying to import a simulation into another simulation. When I tried this prior to the most recent Storyline update it would duplicate each simulation screen - so you would have one screen to the left sitting on top of the same screen that was moved more to the right. With the update I just get one screen that is moved to the left. I should note that I am only importing simulations - there are no other types of screens.

Once I have imported the simulation  it resides under the record screen dropdown as well as in a new scene. If I insert the recording into the project at that point - in either a new or existing screen, it centers the slide and works perfectly. So I just delete the imported scene adn go from  there. In the more recent inserts that I have done, I have not had to touch the captions.

Very odd behavior.

Re: screen sizes  - they are custom. I tried to match allof the sizes to prevent issues. I may have been off a pixel or teo but for the most part they match.

Thanks again,

Kim

Very odd behaviour Kim, these simulations - what modes were they? I haven't come across this issue perhaps because my team and  I are using view mode - slide by slide, and they are full screen. We're having enough issues with other aspects of the program, but yesterday I did import a colleague's file and noted it was not square - I put it down to the template settings altering slightly, or the position of the recording window (sometimes the storyline template recording window drops its custom sizing). Do you know if both captures recorded at the same monitor resolution? I found this can really magnify any slight 'alignment' issues.

I undertand your frustration with the captioning - and the latest update seems to have created more issus than it resolved unfortunately. Please keep me posted on your progress

Hi Aimee

The only way my team and I have found is to import the other presentations into your current presentation, and then the screen recordings from the imported storyline projects will be available for use.

Delete the other storyline project files so you are left with your current project, but the screen recordings will still be available, THAT IS is you haven't deleted the screen recordings prior to saving the imported projects.

Hope this helps
